m5750 upgrade to 4Gb ram

hi,

i'll come clean first off coz i don't want to offend anyone - I don't have a 5750, i have a fujitsu siemens amilo xi 1554. they are the same box though, more or less and i can't get the help i need for it from FSC , so i am hoping you guys might know or at least point me in the right direction!

basically i want to stick 2 * 2Gb ram in it and i know that the 5750 and 5790 can do this but i am not sure how.

history - i bought the sticks, stuck them in the 1554 and switched on only to get a long intermittent beep and not even a post screen. i upgraded the bios from 1.19 to 1.22, tried again but same result.

does anyone know if its possible? i was sure a bios update would do it and it may be one that does, but then again i have no idea if i have the right one!

cheers
dan

I think it depends on your motherboard

It seems that you can't have more than 2 gig. What kind of sticks are you trying to put in?

the sticks are
DDR2 PC2-5300 • CL=5 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-667
each is 2gb
i checked with crucial and they said the speed should not matter i.e. if i stick in 667 and the board only supports 533 then the ram will be backwards compatible and run at 533

i assumed the motherboard came with the shell and would therefore be the same as the 5750. certainly the version numbers of bios seem similar. (not that this proves anything i know).

i am wondering if there is a particular bios version that the 5750 uses to enable 2gb to be seen in each slot?
That may be the case. If your BIOS version doesn't explicitly state that it supports 4gb it probably won't.

AW has just released a new bios version that supports 4gb for the m5550 - don't know about the 5750.

Check the user manual if it says it can go up to 4GB. My M5750/Superman Edition stated it could go up to 4GB in the user manual so check.

You probably need to get a Firmware Update. Try to PM one of the guys or Gals here with a 5750 and see if they can help you out.

I'm not sure if the latest 5750 FW Update will help though.....

No links to AW FTP's are allowed...so I heard....

is a firmware update the same as a bios update?
Yes, it's a Bios Update, sorry I should have been more specific...You need to update your Bios to enable 4 Gigs of Ram. I just did it with my 5550i, haven't tested it yet though...

cool, so all i gotta do now is figure out if a) the latest 5750 bios does the 4gig trick, and b) they are definitely the same kit (i.e. board as well as shell - although i a fairly sure they are!). oh yeah, and c) if anyone has a copy i could use ;-)

i have PMed AW-Isaac just in case he is allowed to comment. i wonder if i flash my bios with an incompatible version if it kills it completely or if i can just flash back with a known good version???

PS thanks all for your comments so far, its nice to be able to find people who know about this stuff. its not great to spend ages on a premium rate support phone line when the guy on the other end can only really just re-iterate the manual!!!

Did you ever get someone to send you the BIOS update for the 5750?

1.19W is the latest listed on the site, and here's the tech notes from it. It only seems to have one "fix" listed regarding Core 2 Duo chips, nothing about RAM. It's too bad I didn't read your thread earlier. I have an m5550 with 2 gigs of ram in it, and I am about to install 4 gigs in it tonight. However, Alienware just released a BIOS update for mine, with a specific fix to "support" 4 gigs of RAM, and I already flashed to it. (ie, before installing the new RAM). It would have been interesting to see if I had installed the new, 2 x 2 gig sticks, if the computer would have worked before Flashing the BIOS. As it stands, I can't test that (can't flash back), and I will be testing the RAM tonight.

Anyway, sorry to ramble, here's your BIOS notes :

For Models: Area-51 m5750/m5790 (17 " LCD)

i didnt get the bios update yet, but thats ok coz i am still waiting for a reply from isaac about whether or not those updates were specifically for the ram increase. i noticed that the version is slightly different and thta may indicate that it is a special version for the ram increase, meaning my version is 1.19, but the AW version is 1.19W. not sure if this is relevant at all but does sort of indicate that it is slightly different to the official released bios version.

AREA-51 M5750/M5790 SUPPORT FOR T7600G CORE 2 DUO

note- that this bios update is downloaded from Alienware support. It is an ISO image and is not hacked or altered.
I uploaded this to provide the T7600G support for those with either a Alienware Area-51 m5790/m5750 who would otherwise not have access to this T7600G Support BIOS version.

FLASHING OF THIS BIOS UPDATE ON A MOTHERBOARD OTHER THAN A M5750/M5790 MAY RESULT IN A NON-BOOTABLE SYSTEM!!!!

Rive:

You think that BIOS of 1.19 would support 4GB of ram too?

hi rive, many thanks for the link

also, i have the same question as skypine, do u reckon that's the one that supports 4gb then?

what usually happens if a bios flash goes wrong? is the system hosed or is it just a matter of re-flashing with a known good version?

Dan:

DO NOT download that bios from that Link. It does NOT work. (ask me how I know...)

Skypine Tried to flash the m5750/m5790 bios on his m5550, and is getting a password request-

System BIOS 1.19W

This BIOS update is presented in an ISO format, and may be used to create a bootable CD-ROM with all the necessary files to flash your BIOS. Apply this update ONLY if you are experiencing problems with your system.

Features and fixes in this BIOS release:
  • Adds support for the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7600G 2.66GHz
It appears that skypine had had a "password" lock set up in his bios before he flashed his m5550. Its hard to say what happened. Probably removing old bios password prior to flashing new bios may have prevented his problem, and then again it may have been the fact he flashed a m5750/m5790 bios onto a m5550.
Personaly after having talked to him i suspect the old bios password was corrupted or wiped out when the new bios was installed, hence the password request locking him out.
