SR Macbook Pro Throttling?

Thread Starter
Hey Guys. I've been stress testing my new 15.4" 2.4ghz SR Macbook Pro in windows with a combination of Intel TAT putting full load on both cores and doing a ATI-Tool Artifact test.
According to Intel TAT my load temps hit low 90's/89's. GPU seems to sit around 85c. Intel TAT notes that the 2.4ghz CPU clocks itself down to 1.2ghz for a few seconds. Then clocks itself back up, then down again. On both cores.

The GPU seems to clock itself down to 375mhz/502mhz (core/mem). Note that they are not 3D LP or 2D clocks.

What should I do, should I contact apple? The macbook pro has to throttle itself to remain stable. I'm running these tests in a 20c environment, it can only get worse in summer (mid winter here in Australia).

Below I've taken a screen capture of the situation.

well cpu throttle might be from speedstep (lowers frequency to save battery when not in use.. to disable this change the windows power settings from portable/notebook to desktop ) as for gpu, prob throttling from heat , but 85c for a gfx is usually well below the throttle point.

Is this Win XP or Vista?

If it's Vista, it may be driver-related. I don't think the current version of Bootcamp is fully Vista-optimized in terms of drivers...

I am not familar with the apps you are using, but there is a feature with the SR that steps down one of the cores if it is not being used. I don't know if that is what is happening in your situation, but here is a link to a short description of this:

Look towards the bottom of the page for the "Dynamic Accelration" section.

I dunno about you but 85-90 deg C for the CPU is pretty damned hot even under 100% load. My macbook barly makes it to 75 deg C under 100% load and my dells never make it above 65 at 100% load.

I am having a similar issue with My CD Macbook Pro I hit 95C while gaming and it shut me off. I took it to my local Applestore and they said that since it was in windows they wouldn't do anything about it.

I was considering selling my macbook pro for a SR based macbook pro but now that i hear this I am getting weary.

can anyone else post temps under load?

if it's a windows issue, can't you get a fan application and simply crank them up while gaming?

You could try to undervolt the processor in windows. My acer 8104 used to hit 100C or higher when gaming. I had to undervolt it to keep it usable. I use RMclock on every windows laptop I use now, even if it is cool running.

That said, my MBP hits 87C under load and seems to have no problems. WoW (OSX or Windows), LoTRO, Fate, Wizardry 8 all run with no issues.
