A little disturbing...

For the hell of it I went over to alienwares site to see what they were up to, and I just stumbled across the m9750. How is it possible that they managed to fit two 7950's into a 17-in notebook, and all of us over here are claiming it'd be impossible to even fit one 8800 type card into a 17in dell b/c of the heat? The second thing that puzzled me, I read over here** on one of the first couple pages, that being that Alienware is offering an upgade path from the 7950's to 8800's when they come out. How can THAT be possible, if nobody even knows what form factor or cooling they're going to need. The last thing that worred me was the benchmarks. The CS:S benchmarks for full everything at 1920x1200 seemed a little low in terms of FPS for an SLI 7950. My 7900 gtx gets higher FPS than that at full settings. Hmmm

Edit: Another thing that I wonder about, with the same CPU and GFX card as the M1710, why does it only get about an hour and a half battery life? What does it do with SLI gfx cards when you're not gaming? Shouldn't it completely disable one to save power? It's not like you're powering a 19-20 inch screen either.

Most reviewers don't know how to optimize drivers or tweak settings, which is especially important for SLI. Hell, I look at a lot of SLI notebooks a few weeks back and some of them still default coming with Vista; Vista's SLI support is atrocious.

I wouldn't worry too much, just look at 3dmark score (from some other notebook SLI reviews) AND hardware specs of those sli 7950 notebook cards and you'll see they are beasts...pretty much same spec as single gtx yet pulling ~10k in 3dmark06

yea I guess I didn't really think too much about drivers but, I assumed the benchmarks were done under XP

A more correct way of saying this is "Nobody knows what form factor or cooling Dell is going to use". Dell has all of their GPUs and heatsink custom made to their own form factor. To other companies they're just going to be MXM chips. They will use the same form factor and cooling as the rest of their chips.

I agree its all physics if you have more of a surface area exposed on the video cards the better the heat exchange will occur with the cards That how you put to cards in a 17" notebook.PLus having a fan on both vid cards allows the heat to escape the computer which doesnt allow heat to build up..

Although the link above has the additional data of Sager saying that the quad core should not be used in their laptop designs.

Yes. Two 7950s is two hot parts. One 8800 is one hotter part.

instead of one big vid card if you have two vid cards that are smaller there is more of a surface area on them to cool them down and exchange heat with the surrounding air..

The pioneercomputers website also now shows that availability on the 8800go parts to be Q4, 2007.

Anyone notice the two ranges that claim to have these graphics are the DreamBook and the Phantom?

Great names.

I'd like to announce the immediate formation of Vapour Computers. We will be taking pre-orders for the Insubstantial Ghost laptop - the most powerful laptop in the world - with SLI 8800 Ultra overclocked GPUs, twin quad-core processors, and five 2.5" hot-swappable disks in RAID-5 as standard.

Pre-orders are subject to immediate credit-card debit and are 100% nonrefundable in the case of the parts being illusory or the company disappearing up its own ass and refusing to answer mail or phone queries. 35% sales tax not included. Free shipping! Nigerian law applies.
