Don't like the look of the new Inspirons? Buy a Vostro!

Dell just released the Vostro laptop service manuals. They are IDENTICAL to the new Inspirons that were released a while ago with one major difference. Vostros are completely black. The only thing silver/grey in color is the Dell Logos, media buttons, and model name. Comes in the same flavors, 14" 15" and 17" and the Vostro 1000 which is a Latitude 131L/i1501. The Vostros have the same options of their Inspiron counterparts so if you're wanting a 1720 but don't like the colors get yourself a Vostro 1700 that's all black.

Now if only they worked with docking stations, I'd buy one.

So same crap, just in different color?

I wouldn't go so far as to call it crap, but yes it's the SAME systems only in a different color. And Vostros dont' have a pick your lid color.

Can you tell me why they are making a point at selling this vostro line to business when it does not even have the docking port on it. It doesnt make any sense to have one line for home and one for business and the only difference is that it comes in all black.

Dell's selling the Vostro line to business the same reason they used to sell Inspirons to business. It's a cheaper alternative to the Latitude Line. If you want docking, buy a Latitude or Precision. Most customers won't use docking though, the only customers I have that make extensive use of docked laptops are a Bank software company and the VA hospital. Most people don't have docking stations which is why so many of them turn up on eBay for a fraction of their price new.

you pay more for the same config in a V, there just isnt any coupons.

no thanks. the savings are in the lower baseline configs, like most small businesses will buy.

I would not exactly call what I put together a low end configuration as it does have the full Santa Rosa chipset / Sonoma CPU, discreet GPU, DVD burner, larger battery, Bluetooth, 120 GB Hard Drive, leather carrying case, webcam, etc. However I see where you are going with this and I would certainly agree that the current promotion favors low to mid range configurations. However perhaps in a few weeks there will be promotions and/or coupon codes for a percentage off configurations over $1200 or something along those lines. Anyway I guess my point is that I am impressed by the configuration I was able to put together for $778.

Here is a link to the HOT DEALs of vostros, they can be very resonable, and if anything I really like the all black. i think they are nicer to look at.

I have very little experience buying laptops (except for my wife's Mac Powerbook bought 6 years ago) and know nothing about them except what I am learning here... But it seems to me that the most significant reason for the Vostro is so that Dell can sell a computer with XP instead of Vista. I work for a mid-size company and we have not gone Vista and I doubt we will until forced by non support of XP from MS, whenever that is. So people buying them for corporate use want XP today and don't want employee's wasting time learning a new OS, especially a brand new one.

Yep,XP is the reason I just ordered one,if I don't like it,I will return it and keep my M65 and build a desktop solely for movies and games.
I'm really quite interested to see how much bulkier it seems than my current laptop being 10mm thicker also what the truelife screens are like considering I havent actually owned a glossy type.
Bit of a bummer about the docking connector, but I suppose you have to look at the reality of a budget laptop that is good value for money as it stands.
Truth of the matter is,if it hadn't a midrange graphics card in it,I wouldn't have looked twice at it,but since Dell doesn't see the need for anything other than variations of low end graphics in their real business notebooks I will see how the Vostro is.
