Bad memory on Mobility Radeon 9800 (Insprion 9100)

Hello all,

I just purchased an aftermarket Mobility Radeon 9800 for my Inspiron 9100 laptop, and believe I am having a graphics memory problem.

During POST or Windows XP startup/normal operation, there are horizontal streams of tiney pixels in a "stairstep" effect across the screen, many of which are flashing/changing color rapidly. Moving windows around will cause the background of those windows to change color; green, maybe purple.

The laptop itself is fully operational when exhibiting this behavior; Windows doesn't act as though there is any problem. I first suspected a memory problem, and the Inspiron's on-board diagnostics confirm this theory with memory read/write errors.

The question I have before I contact the vendor and arrange a return/replacement are these:

* What's the probability this could be something as simple as a connector seating issue; that is, the unit is connected well enough to operate, but perhaps one or two contacts aren't absolutely perfect? (A stretch, I realize)

* Any chance this could be a BIOS-related problem that simply manifests itself in memory-related errors?

Installation of the card was trouble-free, and I still have the old 64MB 9700 to put back in should this problem prove unresolvable. But I thought I would tap the experts here for any other ideas I'm not thinking about. These guys are hard to find, and I hate to give up on it if there's any chance of an external fix...

Many thanks,
dave

That sounds like a graphics memory artifacting issue. If you still have the card in the system I would suggest downloading ATI Tool here and then run a simple "Scan for Artifacts" check without overclocking. I hope that when you installed the card you properly grounded yourself and also tried not to touch the card anywhere but its edges. Other than that, if it shows up as having artifacts in ATI Tool, then you will probably need to request an exchange. Good Luck!

Thanks very much for your feedback. I will download the test tool and go from there. FWIW, I've been handling these kinds of cards and components for about twenty years and *never* spoiled a card, and handled this one just as carefully as I could.

Heck, I'm from the old school that used to plug in little 4K RAM chips into motherboard sockets one at a time, and I never lost one of those, so I figure I'm doing something right

Thanks again. I will advise progress.

Well, I ran the ATITool and it showed artifacts out the ears - which didn't surprise me, as the artifacts are also present during POST on this card. I removed the card, blew out any obvious dust, reseated everything, and it didn't make any difference. I've contacted the seller and they've already issued an RMA for the card. Alas...

Fortunately, I still have the original video card for the unit (64MB Radeon 9700) and it worked perfectly when I reinstalled it.
