Can't get 4 GB of RAM working in XPS Generation 2 notebook

Thread Starter
RAM is cheap now, so I figured what the hey.

I got 2 sticks of Patriot PC4200 200-pin SODIMMs from Fry's, popped them in...and got a single blink of the three lock LEDs, followed by it shutting off. Interestingly, mixing the 1 GB and 2 GB gives me only 2 GB recognized if it's in the first bank, and a memory error if it's in the second bank.

In retrospect, I should have looked at Intel's website - the 915PM only supports 2GB of RAM. Oops! At least I can take the RAM back for a full refund.

Posting because I couldn't find the answer to this question anywhere.

Yeah the 915PM only supports 2GB and the 945 only 3.25gb.
To get that full 4gb visible your going to need a brand new SR laptop.

The reason the 945 only supports 3.25GB of memory (actually it supports full 4GB but 750MB's worth of addresses are reserved for PCI Devices) is because the 945 also had to be built for 32bit only CPUs like the Core Duo and Core Solo. Santa Rosa only has 64bit capable CPUs so therefore it can use the physical address extension in 64bit OSes.

So new dell 1720 laptops can handle 4GBS> ?

If it remaps the memory into 64bit address space, it will see the whole 4gb.
If it doesn't then it will have the same 3.25-3.5gb as the 9400.

I'm not sure what exactly the motherboard is capable of.

Well it's one of the options so I'd hope so!

Yes Santa Rosa supports 64-bit addressing so it will be able to utilize 4 GB or RAM. However, now that there is hardware support for the full 4 GB you're also going to need software support for it. This should require you to use a 64-bit operating system (which btw it doesn't seem like Dell is offering).
