Dell precision M90 and gaming

Hi, all

I'm looking at various options to eventually buy a replacement laptop. I'm looking for a solid gaming machine.

As I understand it, the build quality of the XPS is good, but the best build quality from Dell is in their precision line

Can anyone tell me how the Quadro FX3500 card performs in high-end gaming, comapred to the GeForce 7950GTX?

Thanks!

About same card as 7950GTX.

Get M90 from Ebay. I got mine brand new from Ebay at 1450 about a month ago. Just have to go w/ a good seller is all.

Hi

Can you recommend a good vendor on Ebay for this laptop? I don't know all that many that deal with laptops on Ebay

Thanks!

I bought from dogmicro, but it doesn't look like he's selling anymore.

You just need to find one that's selling in your country. Make sure that he/she has sold many, many laptops with good feedback. Like Achilles, I got an M90 from an ebay reseller in the UK. He'd sold literally thousands of laptops, with very good feedback (>99%). The goods were as described, and the warranty was transferred with no hassle. The downside is that these guys tend to sell cancelled items (where the original customer has cancelled the order), so you may not have all the configuration options you can get on the Dell website.

The Precision M90 is built absolutely NO BETTER and NO WORSE than the M1710 or E1705. With a few cosmetic and feature differences the systems are IDENTICAL to each other. The M90 is a 1710 with a different BIOS and none of the extra LEDs.

That being said, go with whichever option is cheapest.

does the xps have the middle click like the m90? also, the screen on the m90 is not as glossy as the xps's. i'm sure there are threads with comparisons between the two models, but yeah, as everyone has said, they are essentially the same, performancewise, where the xps is tweaked more for gaming.

also, you can check the dell outlet from time to time to see if there are any decent m90's on there if you don't trust ebay. there are actually a lot on there right now, and 16 of them with the 2500m or the 3500m, ranging from about $1650 to $3300.

like mrevil said, go with whatever is cheapest, or whatever you're willing to pay, assuming it has approximately what you want. in general, an equally spec'ed m90 will be cheaper, i think. actually, looking at the outlet models, they are about the same, with the xps being slightly better, as you're pretty much guaranteed the higher resolution screen (if that's what you'd want), but with all those, you'll have to make a sacrifice in some spec or another to get the best price.

in comparison to achilles' m90, i got mine about 10 months ago, before core2duo arrived (and thus the cpu/gpu were the highest available) for about $2000 with the 3 year on site warranty.

I decided for a M90 more than one year ago ... Rock solid & fast ... Reason to pick the M90 was that the M90 is not equipped with a glossy display (which makes it hard to work on a sunny day) and because of the more decent optics ...
Before you buy one, you should compare both in real life.

The 1710 has middle click through the driver, but not the specific button. However that's really a cosmetic difference (My D820 doesn't have a middle button either but the L+R button works fine as middle click). The differences from the M90 and 1710 really are just skin deep.

Don't forget about the security features on M90!! TPM, and smart card reader.

mr evil - you're incorrect. The m90 is a full framed magnesium alloy body whereas the E1705 is squeaky plastic. Build difference is there, and it's huge.

Well, for some, having a laptop that doesn't look like a spaceship is better. Personally, I could never show up to work/school with a red laptop with flashy lights all over it.

Like mentioned, the biggest difference between the two is the LCD screen. I have owned the Inspiron 700m, which features the TrueLife display (as found with the 1710s), for over over 2 years prior to this M90's semi-glossy LCD and I vowed to never go back to it. Sure it looks nice in pitch black, dust-free situations, but it is miserable in a realistic setting. The amount of glare you get with it and the amount of dust it attracts was a pain in the but. I get absolutely no glare that I can tell with this LCD... love it!
