External HD stopped working on mac only...?

Thread Starter
Hi; I've got an 80GB USB 2.0 external hard drive and it was full of rubbish so I reformatted it on my windows PC as I couldn't find a format option on my mac; now after I reformatted it I can no longer put files from my mac onto it... I can put files from my windows dell onto it and access them from my mac; just now from my mac...?
Anyone have any ideas on what to do?
I've been using this hard drive on both my mac and dell for over a year now... just a sudden problem?
Thanks for any help

When you formatted, you must have done so in NTFS. By default, OS X can only read NTFS, you will need MacFUSE in order to write to NTFS. There is a website out there that has all the files you need and instructions for installation. They have it all packaged up in a .dmg now (you used to have to do really annoying things in Terminal to get it to work) so installing it will be easy. I have noticed that the latest version seems to make the drives mount as network drives, but you can search them and read/write them just fine.

The format option for OS X is located in the Utilities folder inside the Applications folder. Inside that is the app, Disk Utility. You can partition, format, rename, and do other disk stuff from there.

Just a quick FYI: there is no real "format" tab or command in OS X Disk Utility; the closest thing to it is to erase & then partition which will accomplish the same thing.
