m1330 or m1210?

Hey folks,

Sorry for the long post/

I know this has been asked before...but I've been tearing my hair out over this. I wanna get rid of my inspiron 9100 and carry around something smaller. I've currently got the mr9800 video card and do some low detail gaming (mostly old games...BFV, BF1942 demo, WoW). I do need to use it for Second Life as part of my job. I also do presentations and stuff for work.

The cost/benefit ratio of lugging this thing around in comparison to its performance is waning. I've been thinking of forgetting the whole desktop replacement thing and take a cut in gaming performance for portability. The portable computers are getting to a point that even with low end graphics card they are comparable to my 9100 with the mr9800 (almost).

I've been looking at the m1210 with keen interest...it's pretty compact and cool. But, I've read the extensive thread about complaints related to the screen. If I went with the m1210 I'd be getting the AV package in hopse of the AUO screen which is supposed to be marginally better.

I've also been looking at the m1330 because of the LCD screen...it's a little bigger, but lighter. It's also about a thousand dollars more expensive (decked out with a decent screen, video card, blue tooth, etc.).

When all is said and done I'm looking at nearly identical specs, except for the LCD screen, the fingerprint doohickey, and the new dx10 capable video card. And, like I said, the m1330 is bigger, but lighter. In your opinion, is it worth it? Bear in mind that if I went with the m1330 I'd have to wait until there was some sort of coupon/sale or it turns up in the outlet...cause I can't drop 2,000 on it. I'm looking at 1200 tops. The m1210 is available decked out for 1100 (including tax). I'm just a little nervouse about the LCD problems...and the older technology.

You'll be waiting a while before the m1330 is =< US$1200... brand new release mate. That being said though, of course it is faster, with newer tech, hence you will pay more. And it may be a little wider, etc because of the screen, but as you said it is lighter and much thinner than the m1210, so I think it wins in the portability stakes.

If that is your budget, then I would go ahead and order the m1210, unless you are happy to hold out for a while (but remember that the m1210 will disappear soon as the m1330 is in effect the replacement... most of the dell models will be phased in the coming weeks/ months as the new ones take precedent).

Am I right to believe, though that the only thing faster than the m1210 is the video card (and only by a bit)? I'm looking at the same CPU for both (the 2.0 gig one with the bigger cache)...same RAM...so nothing would be faster but the video, right? Or, am I missing something?

The m1330 has santa rosa.....the m1210 does not (i think). Get the m1210 with an extended warranty and you will probably end up with a m1330 in a couple years. It's gonna be awhile before there are any 1330's in the outlet, I'm sure, so you might want to bite the bullet and get the m1210. The LCD really isn't that bad, I wish it was a little brighter but all in all, you probably won't notice most of the time, and it's not exactly worth $1000 dollars.....

I know the problem of making this hard decision. I was thinking of getting rid of the M1210 and getting a M1330 but i have to say that the M1210 is the best laptop i have ever owned. I have not had 1 problem and have had it for over a year now. I have decided to stick with the M1210. It is small compact, light and does loads and loads of stuff really well. It runs vista and Linux a dream.

If i were you i think that i would get the M1330 for the fact that the screen is a little bigger (i like a laptop to be a laptop not a desktop replacement) but other than that i cannot sing the M1210 praises enough.

Awsome laptop with bags of potential. As to the older technology. It copes exceedingly well with everything that i throw at it so i dont think that that is an issue

Thanks for the reply. I'm still thinking about this and probably will for another month before I make a decision. All I know for sure is that I don't want to go the 14.1 inch route even though they got some cheap deals for pretty much the same specs (minus the LED LCD). Anything bigger than 13.3, in my book, and I start looking desktop replacement. In that case, I'd go 17 inch with a real vid card. But, I'm SOOO TIRED of carrying around an Inspiron 9100. So, any additional info definitely helps.

i just got a 1210 from the outlet for 679$

I just went with the M1210. Here is why:

1. 4 USB ports vs. 2
2. Price. You will not touch the 1330 for under 1600...

I got mine for 849 loaded off the outlet. Just my two cents. The 1330 is awesome, but it is not that much better than the 1210 to justify the extra 1000 it will cost to configure a comparable system.

yea, i actually bought 2 out of the outlet (1210), for the price i woulda paid for one 1330 loaded.

1 1210 was fairly loaded, the other was a base.

The 1210 is one sexy machine. I love mine

The other thing to consider is that DX10 is practically worthless right now, and all indications are that it will not be so good with the current gen of HIGH END vid cards. Need we speak to the lowend cards? I think not.

That said, the 1330 is a nice machine. I decided against it because it was more than 2 and a half times the cost of what I got off the outlet.

The LED screen for me is the only real selling point of the 1330, but not a $1000 selling point.

From everything I am reading, the 1210 should be solid tech for at least 2 more years and stretching in a third year if you have a sizable drive and 4 GB of ram with gaming as a secondary thing (I got a desktop and the M90 for that).

i still think the 1210 has more overall use than the 1330.

with the exception of the 1330s newness factor, its just a small upgrade spec wise.

cant wait, i get my 1210 wed!

and the 1330 will become a classic in due time. Wait till people start getting them in their hands and raving about the LED screen, built-in cam, biometric reader (no more passwords to log in), slot-loading drive etc... everyone will want one - believe me.

Like Desmond on "Lost" would say: Amen, brotha.

I am sure it is a great computer, but no one can say it is $1000 better. That was the point. On equal dollar purchases of course the 1330 is a better computer. That is a given. The OP had a budget, and there is no way with the LED screen and completely loaded that it falls into that budget anytime in the next 6 months to a year.

That said, enjoy the 1330. I am sure it will be awesome...
