upgrades for m9750

Thread Starter
hi everyone, just wondering how many other people are on the same boat as i am and what can be done about it.

i ordered my m9750 two nights ago and since i was kind of on a budget, ordered it with some basic parts, i.e. 1 gb ram, single video card, and single hard drive. i'm sure there are others of you who have ordered the m9750 with the basics with the intention of upgrading with cheaper parts (maybe links posted?).

well, i just wanted to know if buying parts from a third party, like memory from newegg, and installing them will void the warranty. if i bought the memory from newegg, but called alienware to walk me through it, would that work?

things i need to upgrade:

memory: 1 GB to 2 GB DDR2 667 SATA150 (found one with cas latency 4 on newegg, is this better than the same memory with cas latency 5, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231116? hm.. just checked newegg again and the memory with cas 4 is gone today. same one as the product above, but with casl4 @ $99.) and is it better to go with 2 x 1Gb or 2GB + 512 MB, which is a little more expensive but can utilize one of the original sticks, of memory. i read someone's post saying that he has 2.5 GB of memory and it works fine for him.

video card: single to dual graphics card, but at a later date when it's cheaper. will be done through alienware.

hard drive: adding another hard drive, maybe. currently 100 GB 7200 rpm. guess i'll have to see if that's enough space first.

looks like the most important upgrade is the memory.

want to thank everyone in advance for the input.

edit: just saw a corsair valueselect 2 x 1GB, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145157, on newegg. anyone know the advantages and disadvantages with this one and the g.skill? which one would you get?

edit #2: g.skill 1 GB DDR2 SO-DIMM 667 casl 4, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231129, is this better? <-- edit #3: just realized this is only 1 gb.

Yeah I'm in the same boat with the ram and no I don't think it will void your warrenty adding your own ram and harddrive. I'm not too familiar with this type of ram but someone on the forum here would have better input. Congrats on the new lappy

if you replace the RAM is only voids the warranty for the RAM keep your original RAM to trouble shoot and if your original RAM doesnt work then keep the original RAM in there and then call alienware for support but dont tell them you swapped out your RAM maybe this will help

As far as I remember, if you call Alienware Tech Support while you're installing the part, there won't be a problem. I believe its also standard (and might even be a law) that if a product has "user replaceable" parts, end users should be able to replace parts without voiding the computer warranty. I've heard in the past, that as long as you have an Alienware tech on the phone assisting you with installation, it won't be voided.

Anyone know if this will work in the 9750?

There is a tutorial for memory removal and installation in AW's knowledgebase in their support section. Here it is...

AW will assist you in installing memory if you buy it from them, but not from a third party, and any issues that may be memory related won't be covered by the AW warranty if you buy it elsewhere. The rest of the machine remains covered though.

It would be best to buy any vid card upgrades through Alienware, both to make sure the card is correct and works as manufactures alter their versions of the same card sometimes. A Dell 7900gs won't work in an AW. Buying through Alienware will keep your warranty intact regarding the video cards.

As for the hd, I just installed a second hd in my m9700 I bought from Newegg.com. If I have issues with it, AW won't support it, but the manufacture warranty covers it. Also, with components like the hd's, the manufactures warranties sometimes are still valid even after AW's warranty is expired.

I ordered two of these:

Hope the RAM is right for a 9750. My computer hardware knowledge is pretty darn shabby to be honest...

you should have order dual channel RAM 2x1 GB instead of just 1Gb Ram Sticks x2

That ram should work just fine given the fact that the m9750 uses DDR2 667mhz ram 200pin. m9750 owners should feel lucky given that a single 1gb stick of ram for the m9700 which is only DDR 400 cost nearly $120 late last year. Hope you enjoy your m9750 a whole lot since it is a really marvelous machine.

I had an inspiron 9300 but I sold it to buy an alienware m9750. It had DDR2 533mhz (PC2-4200).

Sold it with only 1 stick of 1gig of memory and have another one liying on my desk.

If I get the alien with 2x512 sticks and I replace one of them so I have 1.5gigs would it work?

The m9750 stock rams are 667mhz and the one I am putting in its 533mhz.

Should work, however the one stick of 667 will downclock to run at the 533mhz speed slowing it down a little.

More ram is better in the end.
