possible video card issue?

I'm not sure if its a video card issue or what but, every once in awhile a game will artifact and I have to reboot. It happeend awhile ago, and then I upgraded to Vista and it never happened under vista, but vista wouldn't let me use my external monitor so I went back to XP. The artifact happened again the other day. Also, I've been having problems with my external monitor being detected on XP. Going into display properties and selecting 2 and checking extend, doesn't always work. I have to go into the nvidia properties and hit detect like 10 times, then maybe it'll work. Mostly I just go back and forth for about 3 minutes of hitting extend/detect before something works. Could THAT be video card?

Uh, sry to hit you with the generic questions but...

1 - Have you overclocked the graphics card?
2 - Have you tried different drivers? If so, which?

Graphics card is at default clocks and Dell drivers. When I went back to XP I tried tweaksrus drivers and blue screened so I went back to dell drivers. The artifcating I would attribute to faulty hardware usually and I feel like the monitor detecting sometimes would be completely different.

If you've only used one functional driver, I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. Try a whole different series driver. For instance, if you were using 92 series, try 94 series.

And try laptopvideo2go this time.

Well, as for the artifacting issue, this occurred a long time ago, before I upgraded to Vista, and I've used numerous drivers since then so I know THAT's not a driver issue. BUt I guess I could try some more drivers for the monitor detection...

In terms of video cards I've only been hearing about 7900GS and 7950. Does dell still carry the 7900gtx?
The 7900gtx has been pretty much discontinued for the longest.

So if I try and get a replacement, what will I end up with?
I guess the 7950

if my card is on the fritz then maybe it'd be beneficial to try and get a replacement?
If it artifacts on default clocks across multiple drivers then I'd be looking for a replacement

Ok, I'll see what happens. Maybe I'll pick up some arctic stuff too to keep this one running cooler

Just out of curiosity, when you put in a new graphics card, do you just uninstall the old drivers, remove the card, put the new card in, and install new drivers? Anything else I have to do?
if you're upgrading from an NVIDIA to another NVIDIA, you shouldn't even need to touch the drivers. It's the same driver for the whole series.

alrite then maybe I'll get on this this week. I've been stickin to dell driver b/c laptopvideo2go has been confusing me with the random driver versions all over the place. I have no idea which one to even use

I'm planning on using the 90 series once I reformat

any 90 series is ok? I think the dell stock drivers are 80 somethin series
post #18 of 23

actually, the default dell stock for 7900 is an 80s series and the 7950 default is a 90s series, so maybe if I end up with a 7950 I'll just get the newer dell stock

I'm not sure which driver I am going to use, I am planning on figuring all this out myself

My card got shipped with 98.09 in vista though

So let me get this right... you had artifacts under XP, but NO artifacts at all under Vista... Yet you are blaming the hardware? Dude, if the graphics card is fudged up, its gonna be hosed in all OS's. Sounds like a driver issue to me also. Check laptopvideo2go again and use one of the 162 series XP drivers. People have been saying good things about them.
