Battlefield Viet Nam on an 8887v

I have been playing this game a lot, but my lappy seems to have trouble running this game, and i wanted to see if anyone else is playing this game w/ an 8887. If there are people playing w/ an 8887, what is your experience w/ BF-VN? I have the video set to some of the lowest settings and it still gets choppy from time to time and every no and then, the landscape gets completely screwed up. Last night i had the game freeze up on me 3 times, which is a first time for this to happen. I did add a logitech MX5000 mouse and loaded their drivers for it, but i dont think this would cause any freezing. I have the latest video drivers from Sager installed. Are there newer/better ones available somewhere else?

My lappy:

Sager 8887v, 3.06 MHz, 128MB ATI 9000, 60gig 5,400RPM HD

I never was able to play the original bf 1942. Too choppy. I simply removed it.

I play it quite a bit. Seems to work OK, a little choppy at times though and the ATI drivers leave a little to be desired. (there are problems with some of the textures being transparent)

I have an 8887 2.5Ghz with a GB of RAM

I'm not playing BF-VN but you have nearly the same lappie as me. If you have the v.7.89 July 03 drivers from the Sager downloads site, you are probably on ATI Catalyst v.3.5. To check do Start\Run, enter DXDIAG, Display 1 tab, right box (DRIVERS) and see if it's 6.14.10.6351 or something like that. The 6351 is the important part. If you have that you're on the 3.5s. I'm on 4.2s and 4.3s are the latest from ATI. Surf the forums, or look in the Drivers category, for OMEGA to get familiar with these tweaked ATI drivers, then go to Omegacorner.com and download\install the 4.2s or 4.3s. Follow the instructions provided on the site. You're doing the right thing by keeping your game settings and res very low until you get the game running, then work your way up as desired. Also be sure to turn off all UNNECESSARY background apps in the Task Manager, Processes tab when gaming. (Virus scanner(?), touchpad, ati apps for control panel, other background apps you may have installed and don't need for gaming. They're all performance drags.) Good luck!

EDIT: Check the forum Gaming category for opinions on BF-VN also.

I just checked my drivers and they show 6360 -- i really dont know a lot about drivers. The last time I upgraded my video drivers is so I could play SWG and i havent had any trouble w/ any games until now. I am going to do a search to read more about Omega drivers, but I was curious if i upgrade to omega drivers how this will affect the rest of the computer. should the omega drivers be better all around or are their stability issues to worry about? I would rather have older drivers and not be able to play a game as well vs. compromising stability.

Also, is there an easy way to edit what all is being loaded when i start windows to remove programs from loading that i really dont need running in the background? I have closed everything in the system tray that i dont need, but i was curious to see if there are other programs running that i really dont need which might be hampering my lappy's performance.

Might Try Disabling the Audio

I have an 8890 and I remember a while back for some reason the IRQ for my sound card and video card were the same and it was causing problems with Battlefield 1942. When I went in the Device Manager and disable the audio it worked fine. In the end I just formatted my computer and reinstalled windows so it would reassign the IRQs and the problem was fixed. I do have Battlefield Vietnam (AWESOME GAME!!! ) and haven't had any real serious problems so far. At times when I am in the middle of the woods it will have a little framerate loss, but that is about it. I would try disabling the sound card to see if it makes any difference.

According to my notes the 6360s are v.3.5s from s-seven.net. Regardless of their origin I think yours are 3.5s. My 4.2s are 6422. IMHO:
1. You're on old drivers.
2. Continually upgrading video drivers is a necessary evil, a life's work, and a life's hassle for even a semi-dedicated gamer.
3. Omega drivers seem to have a good reputation, but I've seen some folks that don't care for them. They've worked fine for me. Surf the forums for a wealth of previous opinions.
4. BF-VN seems to be full of problems even for the newer laptops. Again, surf for a ton of previous opinions.

BATTLEFIELD flavors, mods and vietnam

I am able to run all these on an 8887 with 2.4 ghz

It runs slow with secret weapons because of the massive groups of bots but DC and 1942 original run awesome.
I recently started using vietnam and it seems even more streamlined.
My guess is you have too much junk running and/or installed, or your hard disk is fragged.

Although i do get the missing textures in battlefield games, what a pity...

I disabled my sound card and this did not help. The game still runs slower than it should.

I am reading up on Omega Drivers now. I am hearing a lot of mixed things about them. It sounds like some of the late 3.x were bad, but the 4.x's seem to be a little better. I am going to do more research before i install any new video drivers -- I dont want to reformat my drive and start over!

I dont really understand this, but i bought a logitech MX500 mouse last week. I didnt play much when i first got the mouse, but have been playing a lot the last few days and the computer has been completely locking up. I didnt put the two together until this recently, so I uninstalled all my mouse drivers and went back to my old mouse and the game hasnt froze up on me since. Anyone have any ideas on this one?

You don't have to reformat to install new video drivers. Just uninstall the old ones via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs then reboot. Then cancel the new hardware wizard and install the new ones and reboot again.

the way i wrote that was confusing -- what i meant to say is i want to make sure the video drivers are stable and they do not corrupt anything else. I have installed drivers in the past that seemed to corrupt everything else, so in the end I formatted my HD and reinstalled everything. I am very cautious about what i put on my computer now. I have been doing some reading on the Omega drivers and it seems they produce some good software.

I just installed the omega drivers and so far so good. Played Far Cry demos straight through with no probs with everything maxed.

Ok, I installed the Omega 4.3 drivers and battlefield runs much better! If i put on the highest settings, it runs a little slow, but I am able to up the resolution and i can set graphics, geometry, and texture on medium settings w/ no problems. I think I am going to upgrade my sound card tonight to see if this helps performance (EA suggests this in the faq). I would have last night but i was killing charlie
