GPU heating up under vista

Thread Starter
I have an m90 with NVIDIA Quadro FX 3500M.
It came with Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit preinstalled.
I've installed Windows XP as a second OS(dual boot).
Immediately I noticed that GPU under Windows Vista in idle state keeps heating up.
In Windows XP its temperature stays at the level of 60 degrees C in idle state and the fans are not engaged.
In Windows Vista its temperature in idle state goes very quickly to the level of 80 degrees C the fans are engaged, temperature goes down to the level of about 60 degrees, the fans are disengaged and everything repeats.
Anybody knows the possible reason of GPU heating up under Vista?ans
Both OSs have latest drivers installed.

Aero I assume

Wrong guess unfortunately.
I just turned Windows Aero off, but the result is the same.

Basically, in XP Powermizer works (switches to a lower voltage and clock rate in 2D and same in 3D battery) but in Vista... there is no Powermizer.

Now if nvidia is to blame (Drivers) or not.... I don't know.

All I do know is that there is no switching to a lower voltage on the GPU like there should be in Vista.... hence, higher idle temps.

With no load on the card, I still couldn't imagine a temperature difference like that.

Unfortunately that is exactly what I see.

I'm using vista at the moment and my card is sitting at 36 C.

Edit: Whoops, forgot to say this was with i8k...Even without it I was sitting high 50's and not cycling like you

So what could be the problem?

I don't know. I haven't really been doing much in vista sorry. I'm just waiting on my HD and OS to reformat. I can only tell you that I have the 98.09 drivers but it uses the new control panel so I haven't been playing around with it or anything. Essentially, all I'm using vista for is internet connection now.

I still think it is the lack of switching from 1.24v to 1.0v when you are doing 2D stuff (like web surfing).
Since you will (of course) see a higher idle temp at 1.24v compared to 1.0v.

But, if you don't believe me... that's fine.

I would believe you, and this really could have been an issue in not this:

But anyway thank you. Oops. I have to agree with you 100%. I turned off PowerMizer in Windows XP and got the same behavior as in Vista. I guess discussion could be closed. Thank you.

No problem.
I noticed the same thing when I switched to vista (as well as loosing about 30min of battery life) and did a ton of testing to narrow it down to my satisfaction.

Hopefully nvida will put out a fixed driver sooner than later.

Hi, I also have a M90 but with a FX2500M and I experience the same.

BUT my feeling was, that this is caused not by the GPU or CPU but by the Bios Rev. 06 (I guess this is the latest). My "feeling" is that the noise, generated by the fans was much quieter. I always wanted to make a BIOS upgrade back to Rev. A04 but no time til today. But you can try it out (if you haven“t already).

Hmm, to the OP, you said you turned off Aero? Did you also turn off windows sidebar? That also uses the Aero interface and doesn't stop when you turn off Aero. I found that if i wanted to keep my laptop untethered for more than 30mins under Vista then i would have to turn off BOTH Aero and Sidebar.

powermizer doesn't work for me in vista either at least not with 101.70 drivers or 163.11.

If I don't set the fan to startup at slow, I get the same problem.

As it is, my idle with fan at slow is about 60-65C.

The clocks have always been more important in heat output imo so if you want to argue anything, at least say its that and not the voltage.
