Cold booting on battery - E1705

Just what the title says, my E1705 has trouble booting whenever its on the battery. At first I thought it may be a defective battery but I just bought a new one and it still does the same thing. It will power on but the monitor will not turn on. Everything is perfect if its plugged into the adapter and will start every time, just not on battery. It will take about 15-20 times of on and off with the power button, and THEN it will turn on with the battery. After I get it to boot a few times, it boots everytime on the battery, its very strange, it seems like it needs to "warm up" before it works

Unfortunately I have the same problem. I knew it was gonna take a new mobo but I'm kinda lazy and don't use battery too much. I'll get around to getting it replaced soon.

Your system may also have trouble coming out of standby and hibernate on battery

I have the exact same issue. Is the mobo really the cause ?

Not sure, but Dell paid for the repair, and that is what they replaced. The carrier came by with a special box for the computer, and I got the computer back in three days from the day of pickup.

Yes, its the mobo.

yup I returned it to dell after a total of about 6 hours or so and they replaced the mobo and fixed it... really weird... I've built computers for about 10 years and I dont understand why a new motherboard would fix it unless there was a defect with the PCI-E slot or the power button's pins were messed up

Hey guys, I was trying to figure what had changed in my setup before I noticed this problem 2 weeks ago.
Twi things :
A) I upgraded my graphic card to a 7950GTX 3 weeks ago, so even with all the precautions I took, this could be the source
B) I flashed my BIOS from A08 to A09 two weeks ago.

Therefore since it was easy to try, I rolled back from A09 to A08 and I was able to cold boot my laptop on battery this morning, while I hadn't been able for the past two weeks. I'll test for a couple more days and report here.

i am running A06, what's better for me in a08 - 09?

I do not have my laptop right now but I should be running the next to latest version of the BIOS (A08) I guess. I remember I had the latest version until about June or so when the newer version came out. The issue still is not fixed on my computer though as I have not gotten the mobo to replace it yet. I was sure that it was the motherboard though as the GPU seemed just fine and the LCD did too. I also backed my opinion up by putting my 6800U into my M1710 and the issue was still prevalent. If you still have your old card then maybe this is an option for you. If not, then I'm just saying that my issue and the one explained by the OP is most assuredly the mobo. I also used different batteries.

However, the issue I have has existed throughout my ownership of the computer. I was unaware if the issue could just show up one day but I wouldn't call it out of question.

Like I said, I rolled back to A08 and have been successful for the past two weeks in cold booting my laptop on battery power. HOWEVER, I couldn't this morning, it took me two attempts Therefore it shouldn't be related to the BIOS. Since it started to happen shortly after my GPU upgrade, it must be related. I don't have my older GPU one to test, and wouldn't anyway. I'll just make sure I always have my PSU whenever I go mobile for now on.

I'm sending back my second E1705 with this problem. I'm really skeptical they'll fix it.

Has anybody checked on Dell's forum what they say about it ?

The Dell forums show a number of people with this same problem... replacing the motherboard seems to fix it for most of them. I'm just a bit miffed I got two with the same problem. I hope that the third time will be the charm.

And each time they just replaced your mobo ? Couldn't the problem be another component ? I didn't have this problem prior to upgrading to a 7950GTX.

The first time, they swapped the whole system (I was within the 30-day-after-purchase window). The tier 2 tech I corresponded with was sure it was the motherboard.

The problem (at least the one the OP refers to) is most assuredly the motherboard. I have done a number of parts replacements (my own spares) to prove this. Obviously it could be an individual part on the motherboard but we're talking about integrated circuits here.

credit where credit is due

I have to give Dell credit for turning around my return-to-depot service dispatch quickly. I live in PA and the Solectron depot being used for this repair is located in TN.

Friday PM: Shipping box requested.
Monday AM: Shipping box arrives.
Monday PM: Laptop picked up by DHL.
Tuesday AM: Laptop arrives at Solectron in TN. E-mail confirmation sent to me.
Tuesday PM: Repair complete, laptop picked up by DHL.
Wednesday AM: E-mail confirmation sent to me with tracking number.
Thursday: Scheduled for delivery.

I assume they swapped the motherboard out or repaired whatever component was the culprit. Let's hope it does the trick!
