Is My HD Dying/Dead??

Thread Starter
for sometime now, my laptop (dell inspiron) has been running quite slow, esp. when i go on it after its been idle for a few hours/overnight. i also have been getting kernel errors/bsod on occasion and some overheating issues. right before i get the kernel error i usually hear a weird spinning/clicking noise. i am thinking that it is a HD problem and that i need to get a new one.

would you suggest that this is the problem? how hard is it to install a HD? is it just open up laptop, take out hd, put new hd in, and reinstall windows? what brand/specific model is best and where can i get it at a good price?

i also have atapi errors and disk warnings in the system log. and it takes FORVER to reboot the computer.

Urr...could you give us the model of your computer? For example, I would say that I was using a M1710. You can just search for the service manual to your laptop online and find out there. Most Dells I know of let you access the HD via two screws on the bottom.

Most inspirons make it pretty easy to replace a hard drive. Dell's website has step-by-step instructions (with nice pictures) of how to do this.

Newegg and amazon both have pretty good prices for hard drivers.

Yep, definitely sounds like a hard drive.

I also agree that it might be hard disk probem. I am getting atapi error in the Event logs but the hard drive is still holding up and no system crash yet, but I will be getting ready to replace it soon. Also if you have no clean your system fan, I suggest you clean it with a blast of compress air. I blast some air into my 700m and I was amaze to see a lot of dust coming out.

Do a backup as soon as possible. Burn files you cannot replace such as pictures, documents, etc. onto CDs. Replacing a hard drive is a simple process, no tricky steps .
