how hard do you think it would be to run ubuntu on a compaq presairio desktop in dual boot with xp?

only way to know for sure is to try it out. hell, ubuntu is a livecd so you will know for sure if it works before even touching the installer. so have fun!

my prediction is that it will work just fine unless you have some really obscure parts in there.

You should have no problems dual-booting Ubuntu with Windows XP.

I am about to dual-boot my desktop with Ubuntu 7.04, and Vista Business. I will be dumping my new copy of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0 in favor of Ubuntu, as I don't really like Red Hat's corporate version very much. True, I got it as a free upgrade from the 4.0 version I have at work, but it's not as nice as Ubuntu is. I should also mention that I have Ubuntu on a test laptop at work and it's a great distro. I am running it on a Lenovo A31, 2 Ghz P. 4, and 768MB RAM. It has turned into a screamer of a laptop, after getting rid of XP Pro SP2.
