Misc M9750 questions

Thread Starter
I'm considering buying an M9750 and have some questions about configuration. I am buying a new computer because my dell notebook has a 128Mram video card that is too laggy in games. Here is the configuration I am considering and why:

1. One 7950GTX. It will be a huge improvement over what I have. I am reluctant to get two of them because two would be an even bigger loss if I eventually decide I want to upgrade to a DirectX 10 GPU. If DirectX 10 is not that big a deal, I could always buy a second 7950GTX later.

2. Wuxga LCD. I think I would prefer WSXGA for the casual web surfing I do and games too but I really prefer the gloss finish of the high res LCD.

3. 2.0 gig Core 2 Duo. It seems for games a faster GPU is more important than a faster CPU.

4. One 160G 7200 rpm hard drive. Everything I have on my current hard drive only takes up 56gig. I will have a few more games on my new computer but nothing else that I forsee. However, what don't I forsee? Will I want to turn my computer into a Tivo or are there any other applications for which I should bulk up now? I think I should wait to see if I need more drive capacity instead of buy more now. However, I don't know what I don't know. Can you think of a good reason for me to buy second drive?

5. Vista Premium. I would probably use XP from my current computer and switch to Vista eventually maybe. So far, I don't see the need and it is my understanding Vista slows down games. I might as well order it with Vista since I already have xp.

6. Edit: Now I know it comes with Bluetooth.

7. Edit: I amconsidering Lightscribe but first I will check out the price for blank media.

I can afford the best of everything but I don't want to waste money on features that I won't use or appreciate. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

you might want to buy your hdd on newegg or something to save money (pricegrabber.com is the best). you should wait and buy another hdd if you need it as it wont be a waste and better hdd will be out. the m9750 does come with bluetooth. Lastly I personally think that lightscribe is a waste of money but yes it will print a list of songs legibely.

PS: Vista would work better on higher res screens since it doesnt make the fonts and icons smaller... just a little tip

1 through 4) My thoughts exactly, though the 160 GB drive wasn't available when I ordered, so I got the 100 GB 7200 rpm drive instead. I'm planning on upgrading to dual DX10 cards in 6-12 months.

5) XP licenses are likely to be cheap and/or you could theoretically use your current install on the new computer.

6) Yes, it has bluetooth.

7) Depends...I suspect you could list 10-12 songs, but I think you'd have trouble listing out everything on a MP3 CD/DVD. I've found Lightscribe useful for compact, unobtrusive titles, but I haven't used it extensively. Be warned that you have to buy special Lightscribe media for it.

Thanks for the comments! Now I am feeling more confident in my configuration. I will get LightScribe because the disks don't cost much more and I don't want to have to figure out how to print labels with my printer.

It is encouraging to me that there are only two responses to my post. I think that means that most of those who read my post think my plan makes sense.

FYI, both screens are glossy.

Thanks for letting me know both screens are glossy. I already ordered a m9750 with WUXGA but now I am considering changing to WXGA. I have a 15.4" lcd with WUXGA and I would have prefered WXGA because the text is too small and unnative resolutions all had disadvantages. However, the m9750's 17" lcd without the antiglare would have better WUXGA readability.

Also, for eight months of the year I use a 37" 1080i monitor instead of the notebook lcd so I am having trouble rationalizing spending the $300 extra for WUXGA. On the other hand, WUXGA has almost twice the pixel count. This is a tough decision.

Screen size is personal preference. The biggest factor for me was the backorder on the 1900.

I just left mine in 1440 and it works for me in Vista. This is my first glossy LCD.

I've never seen the 1900, but I'm very happy with my screen.

The screen is hard to upgrade later, so make sure you will be happy.

What programs can be used to remove the commericals from the tv shows that can be recorded from the MCE... I want to save space and I hate commericals on my DVD's
