I will be entering school as an engineering student this fall (at cornell). The computer requirements make it seem like I should get a good computer now, and I almost bought the inspiron 1520, but then started to consider the Macbook pro for its portability and features over the 1520 (I feel that things like portability and battery life are pretty important). I have talked to some people who said that computer power is not really needed until later in college for programs like autocad/solidworks,etc. and now I am reconsidering getting something cheaper right now (i.e. less than 1000 or so, as opposed to 1600 ish for the macbook pro after the ipod deal). Anyone have an opinion if I should try to get a laptop that will possibly last all 4 years, or just get something cheaper now, and then upgrade in 2 or 3 years with a new laptop, or just get a desktop for my room? Thanks.
