Is Dell really that bad? - Page 2

I've had no issues with my 600m at all. I did have my Dimension 8300 replaced once about 9 months after I got it but it was a hassle-free ordeal. Dell shipped a replacement out right away and I sent the broken one back. I've had no issues in 3 years with teh replacement system. I currently have an XPS720 on order and I hope to have no issues with it as well. IMO Dell is by far the best. You shoul dhave great luck with Dell.

Dell is the BEST when it comes to getting you a solid PC, and fixing or replacing it if its broken.

I bought my 9400/1705 because I had heard nothing but good things about Dell. Large succesful companies always have their detractors.

Guys, thanks for all your replies. I would like to upgrade the CPU later on in the near future, is it possible to do so on a Dell? I mean take it apart and replace the CPU? I know on some brands you can't do that. Can I do that on a Dell?

Depending on the CPU. If you get a really high end one right now then there won't be any "higher" to upgrade. Also, since CPUs generally change socket type and such every year or so, getting a high end CPU now would mean you can last a few years.

I wouldn't say dell is the best company in the world... I don't think any are. My Dell 8600 and Dell 6000 still surviving with all their original hardware. I dropped my dell 6000 from a 2 ft high coffee table while running and nothing broke or snapped or anything. Pretty damned good if you ask me.

I just got a new Precision M90, it came with a bad motherboard. They replaced it, and the unit was still bad. They were going to send the tech back out to rip my comp apart and replace it again, but I said no. After a few arguments with management, they finally sent me a, supposedly, new one.

The 'new' one makes a clicking noise on the HD that wasn't there before, has different hardware then what I ordered, and having serious problems with reinstalling windows on it. Guess now I will have a fun time trying to get my money back but will probably be stuck.

Don't buy dell, its just an expensive piece of crap and their policies are corrupt and dishonest.

As you can see, there will be bad and good stories

I'm sorry for your troubles but telling people not to buy dell just because of one single incident isn't really fair at all.

I had troubles with HP before during my first laptop, it kept overheating and crashing and lagging no matter what. I sent the machine back 5 times, each time they said they'll completely replace the system if its shipped for repair 3 times and problem hasn't been fixed. At the end, I just sold the system and got a compaq tablet pc. Ironically, HP already bought them over but I got that and it was a great system to use.

Just remember that people who have problems are generally louder and more opinionated than those who don't. Those of us who don't have problems are generally too busy sitting back and enjoying our computers to come out and extol the virtues of Dell. For every 1 person who comes here with a problem with Dell, there are easily 50 people enjoying their computer with no problems at all.

No company is perfect, and sometimes dealing with Dell can be quite frustrating. That said, after my experiences with the other major PC makers, I don't see myself buying a non-Dell laptop any time soon.

It was more then a single incident. The main issue is their 21 day policy. They only give you 21 days to return a machine from the date of the order. The week and a half they spent making and shipping it counts for your 21 days. I get it and it takes me a few days to figure out it had a consistent and serious problem. Then by the time they send out a tech to repair it, I get it back worse off and my 21 days are up. I argued it with the tech support and then had to make multiple calls with management involved and they still didn't want to send me a working laptop, they just wanted to rip it open again and replace most of the parts. I finally got them to send me a new one, I get it and after I install windows I get "Invalid or damaged bootable partition" error. So I reinstalled windows, worked for a little bit then went back to the error message. A single incident is perfectly fine as such is life, but when they treat their customers like crap when they are at fault multiple times and have a policy such as they do, thats why Dell is really is that bad.

I don't think he meant that you had one incident. He meant that you are one incident.

I have had great luck with my Dell systems (I9200, I9300, XPS Gen 2, Precision M90, 1505) and highly recommend them. I am typing this on a new Vostro 1500 (same system as a 1520) and I must say this is a very solid system. Its a little on the bulky side but very well made. The bottom chassis and LCD top cover are made of mag allow (no squeaking plastic), the keyboard has a very solid feel to it and the true life LCD panel looks awesome. Overall I like this system alot. I think I like the Vostro 1400 (Inspion 1420) a little better just due to its smaller size but I recommend the 1520 unless you need more GPU power for things like gaming.

Dell sells a solid system with solid value, IMO.

Hi. I just purchased and returned an Inspiron 1520 from Dell. I watch a lot of movies on my laptop and watching a DVD on the1520 looked washed out. Hard to explain. Even watching directly off Netflix, the background was gray instead of black and after 3 techs, and emailing digital pictures of the new laptop screen, my old laptop screen and my desktop screen, for comparison, they exchanged the laptop. Second one same as first. I returned that one, also. I really liked the computer. The screen was clear and bright, photos looked great, but the videos were just too light. Now, I am just upgrading my Inspiron 8600 and hope it lasts.
How is your video quality?

My Dell Inspiron E1505 has been problem free the whole time I have had it (a full year) and I have used it alot and traveled with it from college to the dorms to home and its held up remarkably well, plus I have used it just about every single day. Sure, there are cons but there is no perfect laptop out there. Oh, and I love how the Dell Inspirons have the media buttons on the front. I listen to music constantly and those are so convenient that its a genius of a feature.

Dell has been a solid brand for me, my 8600 Inspiron was trouble free for nearly 4 years before I started having problems, Dell due to my extended warranty replaced it with a E1505 that has run like a champ for over a year...I cannot find any problems with my laptop.....

160 Gig Sata HD
1400 256Mb Video
