Got my Inspiron 1520 ONE Problem - Page 2

I hear the same sound on my 1520 only if I'm not listening to anything. Strange thing is I don't hear it when I have my speakers plugged into the headphone jack and the volume turned up.

Doesn't it sound to you guys like it is device dependent? The problem is heard on some headphones and not on others and it is not heard when a wire is run over to an amplifier speaker combo. Seems like some headsets are not as well grounded or shielded and are picking up the EMI, while other ones are not. Also has anybody looked at which CPU configurations have this problem? Do the higher clock speed CPUs have the problem more than lower ones?

Maybe the problem is EMI shielding on the headphones themselves?

like ive said before, it is related to EMI and proper grounding.. if you have an older dell laptop (like the 6000, 700m, models) they came with a higher quality AC Adapter with 3 prong plug... while the new laptops come only with a 2-prong plug... i have both kinds, when i use the 2-prong adapter, i get buzzing and popping, and hissing... with a 3-prong, its silent

It is NOT device dependant. That ugly sound is always there, I can hear it all the time with my earphones, and even worst, I hear it without earphones!!! It is always there, and it doesn't reproduce on the laptop's speakers, it is located somewhere near the hardrive and the heatsink.

I think it could not be related to EMI. It is like that guy said, it is like you could hear your processor work.

I always hear it, with earphones and without them. At night, when everything is quiet, you can hear that noise a lot, an it is annoying.

I switched power supplies from the 2 prong PA-10 to the 3-prong PA-15 - no difference. I still hear the noise in my ear buds...

have you guys tried completely grounding your system? Something along the lines of, removing the battery, unplug it, and remove the CMOS battery, press the power button to get rid of all the juice then put everything back together? I dunno, it worked on my old HP laptop when i had a buzz in the earphones.

I am following two different dell forums. One here at notebookforums.com and another at another similar site. And I am getting confused as to where I am reading and posting. But somewhere I've read that there are actually two different sources of high pitched sounds. One may be EMI coming off the ICs and traces on the pcb motherboard radiated to the headphones. The other is an acoustic sound that is coming from the hardware vibrating the air somewhere in the computer.
