What is your favorite video player?

Hello;

Thought I might post this new thread up and maybe get some ideas from all of you. I have previously been using BSPlayer to watch videos in divx and other formats, sometimes VLC Player. I still use VLC player on my desktop computer (running on Windows XP) but I am wondering if there is anything better since I would like to install something on my laptop (running on Vista). WMP on Vista is ... 'ok', but is lacking more functionality. I am wondering what programs you guys use for videos.

Mplayer or VLC.

Course i don't run Windows unless I have to When I did there used to be a decent one called The Core Media Player, not sure if it still exists. But even when my wife ran windows and I didn't we both found VLC to be about the best choice on Windows.

Yes I do! Just tried it and I like it a lot. Loads of options, looks good and it's free. Nice!

GOMPlayer looks like it just uses FFMPEG, from Mplayer and wraps it in a different interface.

Eh to each their own, I will stick with open source, thanks At any rate anything GOMPlayer can play, it is EXTERMELY likely VLC and Mplayer can play. Mplayer has just as many options likely, though accessed in different ways.

can GOMPlayer play .amr or .3gp files?

VLC can't play these files without plugins. i dont want to install the nokia suite in my computer just so to play these type of files. and i dont want to install plugins too..

VLC should certainly be able to play 3gp files, what version are you using?

Did a bit more reading up on it, it is specifically the amr codecs that VLC does not support I believe, if it is a 3gp container but not amr codec it should work I believe, but I don't have any to test with myself.

GXine on Unbuntu, Windows Media Player on Windows XP

I wasn't impressed with VLC, but I also don't play a lot of different extensions. I choose video players by sound quality & volume.

VLC is nice because I find it to be more stable(In terms of crashing) than MPlayer, and is a bit more robust. I will admit the playback quality is not always the best though.

But then again for playback quality, in audio I use Aqualung for that exact reason. Video... eh no real need to worry about it to much myself, VLC does fine most of the time, MPlayer does fine as well.

to get gom player using all extensins do this

start- all prgms-gom player- gom wizard. This is the 'settings' options for GOM- tik through until you get to 'associated extensions' and you will see 6 boxes, 3 of which are 'unticked'. Simply tick all 6 boxes and hit 'next' and this will save your settings. Now that uve done this uve added several extensions to GOM's detection list

I like GOM becasue it has hot buttons (i know others do, but i like Gom's)

Enter=fullscreen
Ctrl+Enter= stretch image
right arrow key- FF 10 sec
left arrow key= RW 10 sec
Up and DOwn arrows= volume

You can change the way it does 'time jump' (FF/RW) by clicking on the GOM image on top left of player- go to 'prefs' 'playback' go to 'time jump' and chnage it if u want. (i do time jump of 5 sec)

Right now it is J.River Media Center 12. It is commercial application and it does require DirectShow codecs. But it works best thus far. Both GOMPlayer and Media Player Classic don't play sound in some FLVs (perhaps because it is 22 kHz mono) for some reason: no complaints about codecs but no sound on the headphones either. Both crash on some MOV files (I do use Pro version of the latest QuickTime because my video editing and 3D application require it for proper import/export). MPC cannot size window properly on SWFs. Main window aspect is wrong in GOMPlayer and MPC on some DVDs so menu is screwed. None of these issues with JRMC. I hate its slow startup though, especially when I need to quickly preview some video file.

I tried VLC briefly but did not keep it. Don't remember exactly what it lacked. Probably did not play FLV or SWF.

I mostly have MP4, AVI, MPEG,MPG,MOV files that all work fine on my laptop when using GOM. I like GOm becasue of its time jump feature and all the other convienet keyboard features. And couple GOM w/ fraps i can capture images and video so i like it

The only thing I noticed is that the playback on GOM for some reason is not as smooth as on WMP 11. On my desktop GOM works great and I have no complaints, however my laptop doesn't seem to like it. I thought it might be one of the settings, but I tried everything and it still seems to be just a little bit choppy... :/
