Yeah, it doesn't use it...and it probably won't be fixed by a BIOS update. Anyway, 2 years is way out.

Do you really think they can double the bandwidth with just an update? I don't know enough about BIOS updates and circuitry to know

Yea thats what I was gonna ask.

and even if it could...why would they?
you would be suprised what BIOS updates can unlock A simple menu item that offers

PCI-E:Auto /1.0 (compatible mode) / 2.0.

THae capability could be there, just locked in 1.0 mode for now.

Why?

Simple, sell more boards, Further the life of the P35, Keep ppl happy with the Asus brand, because others will do it lol

But doesn't the hardware have to change? The the physical makeup of the PCIe in the p5k, aren't they going to be somehow different for PCIe2? That'd be sweet if a simple bios update could change that but I think PCIe2 needs more power

not that PCI-E 2.0 really matters at this point, but it is a regular practice for High-end MB companies to hide features of thier boards in future BIOS revisions. Even if the board has the physical capability to support it.

Additional power would be provided as it is currently provided, through additional connections from the PSU to the card.

sweet info, guess that settles it for me then haha

Thanks! You really are a never ending source of info

After the announcement of the G92, I'm going to cross my fingers and hope to hell it goes PCIe 2.0 by then If not, I'm sure the G92 will probably speed along plenty in a PCIe 1.0 anyway, faster than a 8800GTS 320mb at the least

Thats what I was just thinking...I wonder if thats a question Asus would be able to answer

I tried sending them an email, they make it such a task to ask a simple question lol

Yeah, I know what you mean...I posted on the forum instead and all I've gotten so far is a "no, the P35 chipset does not support it"

well thats a huge let down

I'm going to wait for more responses, but if it doesn't whatever it seems that some of the top cards today only use x8 out of x16 so the 9 series should still unlock a whole lot of power for us probably using x16 of the lane. 1 Teraflop makes my mind go insane xD
post #77 of 86
That's the thing, the problem you run into (which tey don't bother to mention) is at speeds like that you become CPU limited, even with the most powerful CPU's.

There is a ton of free bandwidth still o nthe PCI-e bus. Trust me That P5K board will keep you happy for a looong time.

I know you keep saying that haha but I'm trying to find the numbers to back it up. And I keep mixing up numbers. Fill rate for the pci-e bus is different than fill rate for the graphics card.
The main reason for the upgrade was because of the 75 watt power connectors. they upgraded the standard for an 8 pin 150 watt plug.

currently cards only use 50% of available 16x pci-e bus bandwidth. CArds don't touch the 1.1 standard yet.

ok ok I'll take you're word for it so long as these new 9 series cards fit into p5k boards =P
