m9750 -- Mouse Issue

Got the 9750 yesterday, and I'm on it right now! Absolutely marvelous piece of hardware.

A few minor keyboard placement gripes but I'll get used to those. However, a glitch came up that bugs me.

I have a Logitech optical mouse plugged in, as the touch pad isn't my favorite thing to use on a laptop. I found that whenever I leave screensaver mode, the mouse icon becomes *invisible*. I see it in one spot but my menus and clicks respond elsewhere.

I had the touch pad disabled, and now it is re-enabled. I'll see if it makes a difference, but I doubt it. I have Logitech drivers installed but this seems to persist. Anyone got an idea to solve this?

I'm using XP =o

I disabled screen saver (I have monitor shut-off on instead). No lockup after one try. I'll let ya know if the lock-up comes back. If not, then it'd be best to leave an actual screensaver off and make use of monitor power-off timers.

I turned off all my power settings
to my screen on my m9750.
Are you using an external monitor?

Some of us had issues with our m9700's and standby. It turned out to be the video card drivers. I have a G5 mouse and that happened to me with a couple 93.xx and 94.xx drivers. I'm using 97.92 now and they work well.

With certain drivers, coming back from standby would mess up the cursor for the mouse. Later drivers seemed to fix that issue.

With modern monitors, you really don't need screensavers or shutoffs, they don't burn in images like the old crt's. The only reason to shut off the screen would be to save battery.

If you want, go to laptopvideo2go.com and get some newer drivers with the modified INF file, and also get a driver cleaner to remove all driver components, and try newer drivers.

Seems to persist, so I'm going to buy in to it being driver-related. I went on to Nvidia and tried drivers for "GeForce Go 7800/7900 laptops" but received an error on installation saying it couldn't install. Seems to think I have something different... Any ideas?

Heck, I can't even find where to check for version info.

Not sure what settings to keep an eye out for on laptopvideo2go.com, so I think I'll dodge that for now.

Forgive me, but I'm still not very attuned to the hardware names and what-not on this computer =(

You can't use standard drivers for the m9700/m9750 as it uses a desktop chipset for SLI, and mobile cards...

You can get AW's stock drivers that will work as is from the support section of Alienware.com. IF you're new to laptops, you might just want to stick with the stock drivers for a while.

If you want to use newer drivers, the Nvidia drivers from Laptopvideo2go.com work fine with the modified INF file. I'm using the 97.92 drivers in my m9700, and there are newer drivers than those.

You need to download the driver of your choice from laptopvideo2go.com, then unzip it. Also, you need to download the modified INF file for the driver that should be right next to the driver on the download page. After you've unzipped the driver package, put the modified INF file into the driver folder. You'll get a "are you sure you want to replace the orig INF file with the new one?" Click yes. Then you can install those drivers and they should work.

I install the drivers through the device manager driver update function. Start it up, and just keep pointing windows to the folder you have the new drivers in, and do it for both cards if you have SLI. After you reboot, check the SLI settings and you're good to go.

Geo, just so you don't feel alone in the issue, I have the same problem. It's most likely a driver issue as Hammer stated, as its been reported before on the laptopvideo2go.com forums. I'm currently going to try drivers of their site to see if the problem persists. I'll let you know how it goes.

anyone confirm that later drivers actually have SLI features enabled for the 7950 GTX, as i installed the latest drivers from laptop2go and didnt get any SLI options....
I'm not sure any Vista drivers support SLI yet...

Hmm.. an update.. I've tried several drivers, from tweaksrus.com and from laptopvideo2go.com, none have been successful at all. the drivers i've tried are the ones hammer has, and the most recent drivers from tweaksrus. looks like its back the the alienware drivers.

im talking about XP drivers

Guyver, I had the same issues... no SLI options when installing drivers from laptopvideo2go.com in XP... actually I couldn't get any of their drivers to install smoothly - did you? The screen goes blank and the system freezes after trying to install the 2nd video card.

Hammer, did you use the install method they recommend from laptopvideo2go? The method in which you go through the device manager to install the drivers, or did you run the setup program?

Until a fix comes up, I'm gonna take Hammer's advice and remove screensavers/monitor power-down mode. Never did think about LCD longevity... But this is no big deal.

Love the laptop to death =)

the mouse cursor issue still persists even when everything is disabled.

close your lid (which turns the screen off) and it'll happen when you open the lid again.

This is a well known nvidia driver issue thats been around pre 80.xx driver numbers.

apparantly there is talk that nvidia ARE going to be unifying their forceware so that they finally include laptop cards. I wish they'd bloody hurry up!!

I download the driver I want to use, and unzip the file. Then you have to download the modified INF file that's listed with the driver. Put the modified INF file into the driver folder and you'll get an "are you sure you want to replace the INF file with the modified INF file?" click yes. Then I install the driver through the device manager. You have to install the new driver once for each card separately for it to work.

Note that I have an m9700 and have no issues with these drivers. The m9750 is a different beast due to the core 2 duo processor. Not sure if that could be causing an issue or not for you...

I developed this issue with my m9700 when I used 93.xx drivers. The way I got rid of it was to run a driver cleaner (driver cleaner pro) to remove all the Nvidia stuff, then I reinstalled the 97.92 drivers and the issue went away.

I have never been able to get nTune to work though. The newer drivers use nTune to adjust clock speeds and monitor temps so you will lose some functionality. With the original AW drivers I was able to use coolbits to OC, and the temp monitoring worked through the drivers.

I think the problem is this line is a bit of frankencomputer. It uses a desktop chipset for SLI, but uses mobile processors and vid cards.
