Converting a D620 too D630

Does anyone know where I can buy a D630 motherboard. I want to convert my 620 too a 630 so I can get the Intel 965 chipset. My 620 has Nvidia graphics so preferably I would like to find a D630 notebook with built in Nvidia graphics. I have checked ebay with now luck and I know that asking Dell about this would be a complete joke. Anyone know where I can just buy Latitude parts?

You'll have to get a new CPU for the D630 board. The 965 chipset has a different socket than the 945. Other than that, all other parts should be exactly the same.

I'm pretty sure the 965 chipset will run any cpu a 945 will. I could be wrong though. Is the video card a board that clips in too the motherboard on a 620/630? Or is the video chip soldered right in toot the board?

You're not reading me properly, the D630's motherboard has a DIFFERENT CPU SOCKET. There is NO WAY your existing CPU will work in the new board. The D630 is Santa Rosa which has a different mobile socket for newer Core 2 Duos.

The video card is also soldered onto the motherboard so if you do the swap and purchase the new CPU you'll have to make sure you get a motherboard with the Quadro graphics.

Oh I see. I just assumed C2D was using the same socket 479. Oh well. So much for that idea.

And why the 965 chipset? You cannot oc this laptop. Stick with the 620. It is a damn good laptop.

Because my 620 is pissing me off. It's not exactly what you would call stable. The 965 is the most stable chipset in existence IMO. Oh and don't get me wrong. I have bought 3 620's now and think they are great laptops. I just have one that is having issues. I already sent it back too Dell with no luck. I wish I could get Dell too just replace the motherboard in it. I'm pretty sure a new motherboard would fix the problem.

Convince Dell to do an Advanced Replacement.

That would be nice. How would I go about convincing them too give me an advanced replacement?

The system should be under warranty (Latitudes have a Minimum of 3 years these days) I don't see why you can't get the darn thing worked on. Unless you're unable to articulate specific problems you are having with the system like you are here. Unfortunately if I were a Dell Tech Support representative, I wouldn't even begin to offer any kind of warranty service without a specific problem other than just some catch all "Stability issue". You're going to have to get very specific and at least put some effort into troubleshooting.

sorry to drag up a old thread, but just for info for anyone contemplating this

The dell d620 and d630 base metal are not compatible items.

d630 has firewire socket and d620 does not have matching holes for it.

Also, the daughter board for usb/ethernet is different (electrically same, but physically different location of usb ports) meaning the two are not interchangable and wont fit in the others casing.

Thats on top of the already mentioned processor issue.

Other than that, its easy, new cpu, new mobo, new base plastics, new motherboard, new keyboard powerstrip and your good to go.
