5690 Graphics FPS problem ATI 9700 128mb - boggled....

Hey all,
I have the 5690 1gb ram, 128mb ATI 9700 mobility card running the latest Omega Drivers..

My system use to run just fine in the past, running graphic games like Half-Life 2, World of Warcraft, Battlefield 1942, etc... Now However..

With a brand new install of Windows XP and first tried the Sager video drivers..
I can surf the web just fine, pull up word docs, etc.. But, when i load a game and the ATI card needs to kick in, my CPU usage goes up to 80-100% and my in game Frames Per Second (FPS) drop to like 2-4... when i use to get 20-35

Can't think of life of me what's wrong.. tried the omega drivers out there but that doesn't help either.. Also tried disabling my Audio Realtek97 thinking that because it's on the same IRQ 17 as the video.. NO help on that either.

I"m racking my brain trying to think of what's wrong since the system use to work fine in the past.. My only thought is the video card is just going bad or something.

Any help or advice you have would be great..

Thanks,
Eric

Did you install the chipset drivers?

Your system will run like crap without them

well, i did miss that.... just installed the chipset drivers and still no effect..
log into WoW and have like 10-15fps .. then after about 3-5 mins of playing it drops down to 2-4fps... then after 3-5min more it'll be ok and go back to the 10-15fps.
really weird.. will do the same thing in Half Life 2 as well..

Wonder if this is a Battery problem or CMOS battery problem? i'm always plugged into AC outlet though, never on just straight battery power.

It's killing me, what the heck is causing this since i know for a fact i use to use this laptop allll the time for high end gaming and it worked great.. just not anymore.

Thanks for the reply!

unlikely it is a battery or cmos issue.

More likely it is a heat issue.

Why exactly did you reinstall Windows in the first place?

reinstalled because my system just got to cluttered with programs, spyware, hadn't been done in like 2 years and just wanted to start fresh.. it was having this problem before i reinstalled windows as well... the laptop does get VERY HOT.. you can't even leave your hand my the fan exhaust that long before it gets really uncomfortable from the heat. not really sure how to cool it down though either as far as if one of those cooling products that your laptop sits on would help.

thx for the reply.

Ahh, you didn't say that at first.

First thing you should do is open that puppy up and blow the dust from the heatsink with compressed air...while doing this, though, use a pin to hold the fan blades in place--a cab of compressed air will actually spin the fans faster than they are spec'd and result in burned out bearings.

Better still, remove the heatsink, clean it out, also blow the air through the fan blades (holding them in place) and apply a fresh coat of arctic silver heat compound (make sure you follow instructions).

I do this every six months. I think there are only 8 screws total--4 on the heatsink and 4 on the compartment

great information gerryf!! thanks, i'll get right on this tomorrow and see how it works.

If you do remove the heatsink, don't even think about starting the laptop up until after you have cleaned and reapplied new heat compound. It literally takes less than 2 seconds for a CPU to pop without a heatsink.

gerryf - Thank you so much for the advice in cleaning my system..

I blew all the dust out of the system and on the fans, and followed the guide from these forums on applying Artic Silver on the 5680 (same as the 5690)..

my laptop is running much cooler now and my fps in games so far is great.
Thanks again for your replies !!

Great to hear--hopefully we caught it before any long-term damage--heat kills electrical components.
