Having played with an Everex personally theres lots to like about the notebook like the fact that it has a decent GPU for its price range. The fun pretty much stops there as theres lots to not like about the Everex. You a system that easily runs hot, is massively heavy for its size, and by far the WORST keyboard layout IMHO for any kind of notebook.

I have the same choice to ponder. Being an engineer I had to put the relevant characteristics into a spreadsheet for consideration. Though there are a couple of questions about who has the better screen and how much better the 8600gt is, I'm pretty sure the Dell is the winner in this matchup. Lets see if I can attach a chart from excel.

Edit - I can't figure it out. Anyone able to post up a little tutorial about how to post a chart from excel?

Edit: See revised post in #6

I am typing on an Everex xt5000t right now. Keyboard is a pain because of the short shift keys. I am trying to remap the "\" key on the left and maybe the up arrow on the right also (don't have as much trouble right. Have to reboot to see if it works. If I can remap it will be tolerable in the keyboard area.

I use touchpad and I hate this one. Pointer will grab ok but hates to let go. I'm trying to find a fix. It is an Alps and Dell uses many Alps I think so probably a horse apiece.

The biggest issue is heat. It idles around 80C CoreTemp. This is totally outrageous. What will actually happen when it runs something .. burst into flames?

I of course can't run anything because nothing works in Vista but that's another issue and not the xt5000t's fault.

It has nice sound.

I'm still trying to like it ... is that smoke I smell? ... I'll have to get back to you

The Everex xt5000t can be tamed.

Use rmclock to undervolt and it runs cooler (much cooler). Replacing TIM with Ceramique helps. There are further cooling mods I have not tried but it is now usable and idles in the 50's CPU.

Keyboard can be sharpkey mapped to be tolerable.

It is light by my standards and I'm starting to enjoy it. Still testing and tweaking but it may have a happy future on my lap.

You will not pull this baby out of the box and be happy. With some work it can be a nice unit. How does one compare a 17inch to a 15inch for spec? I don't think you can.

Eh, too late now. I chose the dell, got a pretty good deal at $699 (somehow the 8600gt card upgrade was $100 one day so I jumped). Just waiting for it in the mail now.

Good choice on the Dell.

I was only modifying my negative post on the Everex. It does deserve several negatives but much of it can be overcome with work ... too much work in my opinion (for many people at least) but it may be worth it for the large screen if larger is what one likes ... maybe. Just saying the Everex is better than my first impression after it burned all the hair off my legs (just kidding ... sort of).
