5680 Review -- > :)

I just recieved my 5680 a couple of days ago with:
P4 3.0 HT
1 Gig of 400 MHz ddr dual channel ram
2 - 60 Gig harddrives
128 ATI MOBILITY RADEON PRO TURBO
108g Wireless card
Modem
10/100 NIC
etc...

Now.. for the review :
When i got the computer it was well packaged, could have been a little better but very well packaged i thought. I turned it on and everything seemed to be working, formated the drives, partitioned, and then began installing windows.

As windows was installing i checked for any dead pixels or defects in the laptop itself: My result was that i DIDN'T FIND ANYTHING WRONG. I was very pleased. So far i haven't had any dead pixels, knock on wood . There is one part of the screen on the left edge that is slightly lighther than the rest of the lcd, but can not see it unless the screen is black.

Everything has run so well and very fast, i am very pleased with this laptop.
The sound of the fans are almost in-noticeable and i love the way the keyboard feels. I ordered the UXGA screen and i love the crisp clean look it gives from every angle.

I installed unreal tournament 2004 & call of duty.
I get an amazing 60+ frames at unreal almost everywhere and i play call of duty with a capped frame rate of 91 ( it could be higher if i uncapped it) . I ran 3d mark 2001 se and scored about 10600. I think this could be higher as i plan on downloading the newest omega drivers and running it again.

Overall as a first laptop buyer i am very impressed and if all goes well i will buy my next laptop from sager. A++

Thanks for your review. You basically purchased the exact same laptop I am getting ready to buy. My main concern with the Sager line is the fan noise issue. I know you stated that the fan noise is "almost in-noticable", but how loud does it get after 2-3 hours of use? In other words, will I be able to use it in say....a public library and not get kicked out because they think I am sitting on a hover craft or something?

To be honest i don't notice it that much. The fans kick on and off at certain temps when your cpu gets hot or not. When playing a game such as ut2k4 i can hear the fans, but it is nothing terrible or anything. When i got my laptop i had it on for about 6 hours installing things, formating and what not. And the fans regulated the temperature. The fans will kick on when the cpu is hot and stay on till it is cool. I think it would be fine to take to a public place as i intend to do at school. I think this computer is great, fan noise isn't a problem at all for me. I mean think about what you are getting in the laptop. P4 3.0 HT with 1 Gig of 400 mhz dual channel mem, you have to cool all that somehow. I feel that the cooling system is pretty well develped and so far i have no complaints over anything. Any more questions feel free to ask.

How bulky is it really? I have read threads in these boards that say it is not as bad as they thought it would be...and then there are the threads that say the thing is a small monster.

personally i wouldn't wait....just a matter of opinion really, only a 4 - 8 % increase from what i hear...and that isn't much considering a new model with 256 mb. I would get the 128 pro turbo

I actually have read somewhere in these boards that the new video card will be of the 128 variety....not the 256. If that is so I am buying today.

I would love to hear back from you or any other 5680/90 users. I am just about to order the 5690 with a p4 3.4 1024pc3200 60 gig 7200rpmhd uxga 6in one card reader floppy second optical drive duel battery and a second 80 gig 5400 hd. Now thats a happy lappy with a bag full of tricks!!!! The only thing that I have seen that I like that this lappy does not have is a wide screen display. Can you guys add some comments on your machinens after having and using them. I was interested to see a packaging comment. This is really important. I have seen many packages arrive very beat up.

Well I received my 5680 back in February. So far I am loving my machine. I was just gaming Painkiller over at a LAN party last night for 6 or so straight hours and it was amazing. The graphics this sucker can push is sick. I had a crowd just asking...wth are you playing thats nuts!!??? It also was perfect for BF:1942, BF:V, UT2004, Warcraft3, and COD all playing them above 40fps with 1280x1024 resoltuion, details maxxed. Over the course of the dozen or so hours of continuous gaming I had no problems. The fans were on a majority of the time either in a low or medium speed - but at a LAN who can even hear? At home when using it I find the fans cycle about every 3 minutes, and am more than used to it by this point. It's even bothering me less in class the longer I have it.

Packaging was fine for me. PCTorque packed it up nice and good. The screen is beautiful. I love 1600x1200 where I can read everything, and fit entire circuit diagrams on this sucker. I don't think I would have been as happy with a widescreen. The loss of height and from what I've seen slightly smaller font would be too much. Comparing my screen to a Inspirion 8600's 15.4" UXGA screen, I have the following thoughts:

Dell screen: Faster response time : 20ms? Poorer color saturation. Black is not true black, backlight gives glowing effect. On 3 different screens I've seen a backlight seepage problem on the bottom and top.

Sager screen: Slower response time: 30ms? Much better color saturation. Black really is true black. Backlight seepage on screens is erratic, random, and can occur in small splotches anywhere on the edges.

I think a Dell screen is a little better for gaming and DVD watching. Though, side by side my screen had MUCH better coloration so its all up to you. I can game fine on mine..which was apparent to everyone with my leaderboard scores in BF:Vietnam

Some problems I have had are a small speaker static caused by 3D rendering and hard drive access. Unless its perfectly quiet you don't notice it, but its there. About as loud as the hard drive actually. I have 2 dead pixels in the far right corner, and never ever notice them. A small splotch, or smudge is in the center of the screen... I've been told I can RMA it for a new screen, but am in the middle of a semester and can't do that yet. Also not much of a problem, and I am the only one that notices it generally. Not sure how the thing got there either... I've NEVER touched the screen more than the clean it.

So there you go. A bit long winded but I truly love my machine. I would have just linked you to my review, but felt this was more real in comparison to how last night went at the LAN. Good luck with whatever purchase you make!!!

I also love my 5680, i purchased it about a month ago now and haven't had any problems with it. This machine flys and runs games amazingly for a laptop. I have no dead pixels but i do have a light spot on the backlighting(however you can't see it unless it is completely black). I love the 1600X1200 screen UXGA and it was a little small so i just changed the dpi setting to 120 and everything looks fantastic. I love the way this laptop runs as it is extemely fast. I like the screen and from what i have seen it is alot better than most laptops screens outthere, of course except wide angles and such, etc.. I have 2 harddrives and i have my games on the second drive and they run great, i have 2 60 gigs at 7200 rpm's. I dont' really notice the fans all that much, i mean think about it, your are ordering a hell of a machine and for desktops with this stuff in them they have like 3 fans, this machine has to be cooled and i love the cooling system. I was also a first time buyer from sager, but if all goes well i will definately buy my next laptop from sager, they are the best
