Also sol, can I ask for advice on optimizing Vista? I found it somewhat sluggish when I first got the computer and would like to optimize it as best as possible
post #42 of 62
I will send you a PM later

Alrighty, got the computer this morning.

I have a problem. I start it up, it POST's and then goes through windows bootup (slowly) then the screen remains black probably for at least a minute before opening Vista Home Premium. HELP!

There's the new system Maybe tonight if I get bored I'll put in the UV lights and UV cable sleeving

sorry guys, not sure if it's one of NBF's new retarded plans but my pics aren't working via pic links. So just use those

what is in the drive bays above and below your optical drive?

The top "drive bay" is really just a place to turn the computer on that has your HDD + power light and such. The bottom one is actually something I think is pretty awesome, it's basically a drawer to keep important DVD/CD's in. So I have all my driver discs in there as well as my OS dvd.

Also, so far I've gotten a UV cold cathode on the bottom of the case, although with them wiring it so well I don't have much cable to sleeve myself. I guess it's good and bad. I can't have a bunch of UV cables, but it's probably a much better job than I'd do myself.

Hey sol (or anybody watching) I assume it's just the piece of silicon I got sucks, but right now my idle temps are about 28C and load is around 58C @ 2.6ghz and it feels like if I push it further, the system becomes unstable. Also, I can only move around the FSB not the multiplier due to lack of EE processor so I have my fsb at 289. Do you think it may just be the heat sink compound not set yet? Or is this just my thermal limit?
58C is extremely high. throttle temp is 60C & there is no reason at all for it to get cose to those temps at stock speed or a litlte over it. WHat are your voltages at on the core?

the QC are not as good at overclocking as the DC's, but you should not even be breaking 50c with that mild of an OC.

I imagine they screwed up on the application of the thermal compound.

I suggest grabbing some AS5, cleaning off the core & the HS & reapplying it.

at 3.85GHz I run @1.5000v & hit 56.8c under Orthos.

I use RMclock to monitor temps & Orthos for multi-core burn-in/stress testing

I just tuned back to stock, anyway, the core voltage is 1.325.

Idle, RMclock says it's @ 40C however both AIsuite and Speedfan are reporting 29C. I'm going to put stock under load and see where it gets to this time around.

After 2 minutes of ORTHOS...we're at 56C for both AIsuite and Speedfan, with RMclock reporting 68C. I have a feeling RMclock isn't working for me here

Well, just OC'd to 2.6ghz and after stress testing for 15 minutes...boom crash. Ridiculous
post #54 of 62
I think RMclock is going to be the accurate reading. I think they really screwed up & you should get AS5 & fix it asap
post #55 of 62
pdonket ... definitely check the application of thermal paste. Doesn't really matter which temp monitoring program is right, the differentials between idle and load seem much too large.

If you reapply Arctic Silver, check their website for installation instructions, and just make sure you clean off the CPU and HSF with isopropyl alcohol before reapplying.

I assume you've verified the HSF is securely connected to the CPU as well. You should easily be able to OC to 2.6, so gotta agree something is goofy here.

Well, I've been talking with the company and because the temps are not out of the ordinary, they will not send me anything to fix the problem since technically I'm not supposed to be OC'ing. Sometime I'll have to pick up some AS5 and try to reinstall the heatsink. If this goes smoothly as according to plan....I will feel pretty proud of my computer skillz. If this goes roughly, not according to plan...I will feel as if I just wasted $300 However, it's not too hard so I think I should be alright.
did you tell them you were overclocking it?

I would tell them the temps are exceeding 60C under full load.

Run Orthos (CPU stress mode) and RMClock & see if the CPU throttles at all. The people you are talking to probably don't have a clue what a high temp is on one of those processors is.

I didn't talk to them about OC'ing because I know if I screw up OC'ing, it's at my expense. Also, I have the Q6600 now running stable at 2.7ghz after reseating the heatsink. The temp on load dropped from 58 to 50C which is quite a relief (stock clocks). I think if I applied some AS5 though, it would drop even further. The Q6600 @ 2.7 is running at 57 load and 32ish idle

Any advice on how to keep vista running for more than 48 hours...WITHOUT...registry errors etc.? This is my 4th reinstall and I just don't know what to do anymore. All I have on the damn thing is AIM-Limewire-BF2142 and anti-virus services. I just don't get it.
Well I just spent 2 hours sending you a writeup on Vista & some useful links to help optimize it...Unfortunately the Notebookforum gods are not smiling upon me & decided to give me a "page not found" error when I pressed send. So I have no ide if you got it or not @#$#@$#@$@!#%@#%#@5

On another note, as far as errors are concerned I would suggest running Ortos on Blend mode (CPU-RAM) and let it run for at least 24 hours (I know) and see if you get errors @ stock speeds.

I am concerned there is a bigger problem & it is not software related.

Could you also elaborate some more on the registry errors & when they occur>?
