M7700 Build my own

Hi Everyone

First of all what a great place. Being unable to afford an Aurora M7700 I embarked on building one myself. Only a few more parts to go.
If anyone can help me complete my project I would be greatful.
When putting the screen together I was at a loss on where to plug the Alien Head LED cable? Is the Alienware inverter a special?

No idea Tricky, though there are others around here more knowledgeable about the insides of the 7700... hopefully they'll drop by.

Oh yeah, welcome to the forums!

Thankyou.
I sure someone here will have the answer. The cable from the LED's is just about long enough to reach the the inverter. Either it is extended to the Mobo or it connects to the inverter. Can't find a spare socket on the mobo though

You have to have the right inverter for this exact model.
The right inverter should be 76-D9TAR-011A
Put the alienware head cable to the small inverter connector.
Good luck!

You might try Excel computer, they have "pulled" AW parts, which means they're used, but they may have some in stock.

rjtech.com sells Clevo D900 parts, but I'm not sure they can get ahold of the inverter as it's an AW only part.

I will give them a go.... I found a fuzzy picture of the right inverter and I see the extra socket on the end. Apart from that... it looks identical to my standard one.
Many Thanx

That would be the one. I think I remember someone posting here that the AW inverter had an extra port so it's a specialized part.

Hi seeing as the LEDs only require a feed, there must be one available on my inverter.... I could solder a socket on to it.

Does anyone have details photo's of the M7700 inverter? Close up of the end with the extra socket

Just got to add another question.. My mobo is 5.3 and the power supply is a 220W House brick. Are they compatable?
the inverter has an extra socket on the left side
the 5.3 mobo is compatable with psu 220W but you can't use VGA card 7800 or above

Thanks for that. I have a spare laptop on the way D900T Mesh with a Mobility X800 card.
I was hoping to get some detailed pictures of the inverter which would allow me to find a suitable place to attach the alien eyes LED to my standard inverter. I have found a 3.5V supply on the inverter but haven't checked the voltage of the LED's
Cheers

if you need higher quality images PM me with your email cause i can't upload them here

Hey Tricky, I just bought an MJ-12 for parts (HDDs, pentium, etc) because the mobo is fried and I just wanted some extra parts. If you can tell me how to get to the inverter board, its yours, provided you pay shipping. PM me with details...

Hi Corvette C6.R FTW
Thankyou your a star. To access the inverter board you will need to remove the face bezel of the screen. This is achieved by first removing the small rubber pads that cover the screws. Next remove the screws from the face plate, Here comes the tricky bit... To seperate the front bezel from the back cover you will need to insert (I use) the edge of a credit card(because it is made of plastic and it won't damage the the laptop) try not to use a screw driver as this will cause damage. This is inserted in the gap between the two and move it getly all round the screen untill the face bezel pops off. This will expose the screen and the inverter at the bottom. The inverter is held in by a single screw to the left of the board. You can then unplug all three leads. Be sure the laptop isn't switched on because there will be 60-90 volts on the inverter.
I have tried to explain as easy as possible. Hope this helps.
When I have finished my project I will try and create a manual in picture form of how to completely dismantle and reassemble an M7700.
Many thanks once again.

Aren't the alien lights hooked up to the left-most LED at the bottom of the screen? They seem to be synchronized, so I think they're electrically connected.

On a side note...

@Tricky, (or anyone with a late-model 5.x motherboard)

Any chance you could snap a photo of the 5.3 motherboard, near the power supply connector? If it's mounted in the case, you can remove the CPU heatsink to expose the area I'm looking for -- the motherboard's power supply region.

I'm trying to figure out if a repair I recently did for a 5.1 motherboard brings it up to the equivalent of a later 5.3 motherboard (which can handle 220Watt power supplies and drive the 6800 Ultra), or if the mod brings the board all the way up to 6.1 specs..

I've only got the 5.1 board and a bunch of dead or flaky 6.1 boards to pattern my circuit redesign against.. so I'm really keen at seeing what Clevo did at the 5.3 revision.

Hi Cosmic Gecko

Here is the picture of the power socket on the 5.3 Mobo. Looks like there is a component fried Does anyone know what this component is?

Hope this helps
