Dumb situation. HP Laptop "jumping/skipping" constantly.

Ok. So here's the Full Nelson. And this story will make me seem like I don't take care of my technology, but I do. Sometimes things happen and we all do things that make us look stupid. This is one of them.

I recently bought an HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop, AMD Turion 64 Mobile Pro., 1GB RAM, 54g 802.11/b WLAN, DVD Multi-Burner +/-RW Drive for $420.13 at a pawn shop with a SHITTY copy of XP on it. I absolutely LOVE this laptop. It does everything I need it to do. I wiped the copy of XP that was on it, put a 32-bit XP copy on it, patched and registered it, and put all my programs on it, and pretty much made it my own. As a matter of fact, I'm using it right now. Couldn't be better. Well, maybe...

But anyway. It has worked perfectly ever since I got it. Never had ONE problem. Until...I took it into a "Refrigeration Room". I work in a Meat Dept. Now, the radio stations in the city I work in are not in my favor. I have OVER 9000!!1! songs on my laptop. That's my "Safe Haven", if you will. The Dept. in the store is very cooled to about 40 degrees, MAYBE. Very cool, to make sure the meat won't produce much bacteria in that area while it's cut. I brought my laptop in there, and set it to play some music. I didn't have the volume cranked; just to 1/4 of the volume control, and 1/2 of the volume bar on RealPlayer. the music was playing as fine and clear as could be, until about 4 minutes later, the music started skipping. Now before I got into this story, I forgot to mention that if I turned up the audio to the max potential, it would skip and lag. Not sure why. Returning to the story, the audio started skipping. I went to the laptop, and turned the audio down some more. Skipping stopped, and then RETURNED. I got pissed, due to a fight at my house, and finally having to pwn everyone there, left in a rampage, ruining everyone's shit for the rest of the day. Including mine. So I said "SHIT" after I tried to turn the volume down some more, but I couldn't, because it was lagging. So I PUNCHED IT! Don't ask me why. I punched it where the sticker with the hand and laptop details was. AND THEN IT STOPPED SKIPPING. WTF?! So I just said "**** it!" and turned it off. I immediately removed it from the cooler, and put it into my bag. I felt so bad that I punched it. I finished out my day at work, and when I got on the bus to go home (yes, the bus; I like to save money on gas sometimes), I turned the notebook on. It was lagging TERRIBLY. It has been ever since. The situation now:

Audio plays, but it plays like it's on a scratched cd.
Video plays, but it plays like it's on a scratched dvd.
Programs run, but it's like my laptop has the processing power of a Windows 95 Desktop.
Booting time is 2 min. and 31 sec. in length (sometimes I don't see the Windows XP Boot Screen).
Shutdown time is 3 seconds longer than normal. (I changed my Logon and Shutdown sounds to clips of songs and shows to make me laugh.)
When I log on, my logon sound plays, but with the symptom of the scratched cd, and when I shut down, the shutdown audio skips for about 3 seconds, then plays fine the rest of the way.
My WLAN no longer boots.

I am still able to do all the things I normally do, just at an EXTREMELY SLOW pace.

With these symptoms in mind, I am going to try a few things:
1. Swap the hard drive with someone elses.
---this will signify the problem is not in the hard drive.

2. Swap the RAM.
---this will signify the problem is not in need of processing power.

3. Backup my data and Re-Install XP after a clean format.
---although there is no reason that a corrupted file would cause this, it's worth a try. If my data is backed up, what do I have to lose?

Now considering the things done to lead to the symptoms, this seems like an 87% chance this is hard-drive related. If my suggestions are related to your's, please inform me of yours nevertheless, and help me find a good place to buy a very good hard drive with at least 200 GB space, and a place that would have a decent priced chip of RAM (1GB). I need to upgrade anyway.

Thanks,
Steve.

And by the way, I DID look through the forums by searching, and found no information on this problem. So please don't suggest using the search button, because I already have. I'm not here to cause problems. I'm here to fix my laptop.

ok, run seatools. this is odd. running the selftest of the hd (short and long) fails. runnig the generic test (reads in hd) pass. i have a spare hd. i will reinstall everything.

This is irritating me now. I have "solved" the issue so far. This is my temporary fix:

I have re-installed my copy of Windows XP into a DIFFERENT directory. When I log on to the new Windows, everything works fine, and it boots up just like it should. Now all of my work is saved into the "My Documents" folder in my old Windows installation. This information is deathly important. It's about 3/4 of the knowledge I possess, including programs I have written, and code I'm currently compiling. I CANNOT access this folder. I don't get a permissions error, or anything like that. I can't exactly remember the error I get when I try to open it. I am able to boot to the old version of Windows if I plug my laptop hard drive into my buddie's laptop, so I may try to get the info off his. But if that doesn't work, I may send my laptop drive to a data retreival team. Any suggestions?

I've had problems with skipping..mostly on my PC (older).

It's always been RAM, or too many applications using up the RAM at that moment. I still can't watch a TV show, or anything on WMP in video, or play music while using the WMP graphics thingy (you know..the swirlys and shit) without turning off my anti-virus. I've had it happen on other PC's with Itunes, and even had a ridiculous situation once where my sister put a tiny dancing banana as the desktop background, and it chewed up SO MUCH RAM the mouse would barely move. It took days to figure that one out..lol

You might have a situation with the warmth, then cold room, then warmth again..things expand and contract quickly. If you haven't verified the RAM is seated properly and you're stil running on the full 1gig, you might want to do so. Otherwise...that's all I know to tell you.

I just know, with me..skipping=RAM.

Steve, You should be able to access the my documents folder using Knoppix, its a Linux live CD. As long as the information is readable then it should be able to be copied. If your not sure how to use Knoppix you could search google, or just take it to a local computer shop they should know how to use it.

EDIT: I also picked up a used DV5000 that was goofy at first, found out I had a bad stick of 512MB Ram, so I replaced it and been running fine ever since.

I have figured out the solution. Re-install Windows XP. I'm talkin' complete format. my Windows has been running fine since this morning after I found my data and backed it up. I was having an unexplainable error. I turned out that I had to go to Start->Control Panel->Folder Options->View

and uncheck "Use Simple file Sharing".

Simple File Sharing-DO NOT WANT

Then I had to find the folder that was containing the My Documents folder, and set my username as an Admin and give myself full permission to do what I plz with the folder. Then do the same thing with My Documents.

Windows has been pwned.
