m9750 - 1440 x900 or 1920 x 1200?

Thread Starter
I am looking at getting the m9750 in the next couple of months and I wanted to get some input.

My remaining question is whether to get the 1440 x 900 or the 1920 x 1200. I know that this is subjective to a point.
I do some gaming (BF2142, Halo, HL2, and eventually Halo 2), research on the web, surfing, email, and audio recording.

I will probably get an external 24" monitor so I am leaning towards the 1440 x 900. I run my HP laptop at 1440 x 900 and that is almost too small for me on a 15.4' screen.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

Here is the configuration that I am looking at:

Video/Graphics Card: 512MB NVidia® GeForce™ Go 7950 GTX
Chassis: 17" WideXGA+ 1440 x 900 LCD - Stealth Black
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 1024MB
Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows Vista™ Ultimate
Tuners and Remotes: Without Media Center Remote Control or TV Tuner
System Drive: Single Drive Configuration - 200GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 7,200 RPM w/ NCQ & 16MB Cache
Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 8x Dual Layer CD-RW/DVD±RW Burner w/ LightScribe Technology - View Demo
Wireless Network Card: Internal Intel® Wireless 4965 a/b/g/Draft-N Mini-Card
Sound Card: High-Definition Audio with surround sound
Warranty: 2-Year AlienCare Toll-Free 24/7 Phone Support w/ Onsite Service
AlienRespawn: AlienRespawn v2.0 Recovery DVD – Windows Vista Edition
Mobile Bags: Alienware® Odyssey Messenger Bag
Alienware Extras: Alienware® Mesh Cap

Alienware Extras: AlienInspection - Exclusive Integration and Inspection - $100 Value - FREE!

Thanks,

1440 x 1900 works just fine for me, I'd go for that if you were getting an external. Would help with gaming performance when not using external as well.

Thanks Iryxian!
I use 24" Dell monitors at work and we run them at 1920 x 1200 and everything is too small.

If visual size is an issue, definitely go with the 1440 screen. Many people have said nothing but great things about the 1440 screen around here, so I'm sure you will be pleased. Plus, it will save you some order delay time and some $$$ on your order. I have the 1920 and love it - I like to be able to see everything at once instead of having to scroll all of the time...

It's bad when you get to lazy to scroll...

I have the 1920 x 1200 screen on my m9700, and the text on webpages is very small. I've become used to it though...

I play games that support it at 1920 x 1200, and they look great. Due to the high res, I can shut off AA if I need more performance, but there is little difference between 1920 x 1200 and 1440 x 900 for most games.

With the m9700, I'd definitely recommend the 1440 x 900 screen with a single vid card as the lower res will be less work for the card, and even though the 7950gtx is a lot more card I think it still makes sense to go with the lower res with a single vid card.

I have an m9750 with a 1920 x 1200 screen and i love it....everything is soo pretty. And the nvidia drivers let you do custom resolutions so you can bring it down to 1440 x 900 if you want

While its true you can adjust the resolution, on an LCD screen you really would want to to run it at its native resolution. Unlike a CRT monitor, you do lose quality and crispness when you run an LCD at anything other that its native resolution. I know when my screen is set to 1440, it looks like crap - colors are washed out and the image just doesn't look as clean...

Thanks for all you input.
I am getting the money together to make my purchase (Or at least how I am going to pay for it).

I like having a lot of screen area and the UXGA res is sweet even though it's small print.

Whatever happened to good old 1680 x 1050? Its right in the middle for resolution, as I think 1440 x 900 is too low and 1920 x 1200 is too high for a 17" screen.

bottom line: 1920 x 1200 looks amazing. and its @ 1080p.

Totally worth it.

Would you get the 1920 x 1200 screen if you are planning on getting 2 cards later?

why do people ALWAYS forget that windows allows you to adjust font/icon size?!?!?!

get the 1920x1200 (i did for my m9750) and adjust your font/icon size to suit. ALL browsers also allow you to adjust text size.

my guide:

1440x900 with 1 gfx card
1920x1200 with dual sli setup

Thanks Guyver!
I am leaning towards the 1920 x 1200, but with a single gfx at this point.
I will upgrade later!

If you are able to upgrade, lets say Dual 7950's to 8800, how does it work?
Do you get credit for the 2 cards you already, or are they basically a loss?

I was leaning in the same position as you. Atm im leaning towards the single gpu for now and the 1440. With the money i save on the screen the prices of a 1920 24"+ have come down a ton and would be nice to have a external monitor that big when i SLI 8800 down the road. THe res on the 1440 with a single card looks wonderful and im sure will run smoothly. Then again im not sure how much you will travel and want you 17" laptop to be at 1920 native res. Anyway just another option to consider. /cheers Joebu

I was thinking the same thing, but space is limited at this point so I probably will not be able to have a monitor. When I get to a point where I have the space for the monitor, I will be going for a 27"!

After seeing a 17" screen with @ 1920 x 1200, I was not as worried about things being to small even though it is $300 more. I may still go with a single gfx at this point, but we will see.
