Trying not to spend more than 600 dollars building a sub gaming computer, and its for my lil bro since he's going off to college.. was wondering if you guys could critique on these specs for me

AMD ATHLON 64 X2 5200+

SEAGATE 250GB ST3250410AS SATA2 16MB 7200RPM

GIGABYTE GA-M61P-S3 nVIDIA GeForce 6100 CHIPSET

OCZ OCZ2G8002GK 2GB KIT

SEAGATE 250GB ST3250410AS SATA2 16MB 7200RPM

ANTEC SONATA III

XFX GEFORCE 8600 GT 256MB PCI EXPRESS DDR3 620MHZ DUAL DVI

Dunno about the video card though, whether to go with the 8600gt, 7900gs, or x1950... and yea i plan to build the comp by next week so any quick input would be helpful =]

oh and im ordering parts from mwave if that matters.. cuz mwave is down the street from my house...

I'd save money and buy a better performing non dx-10 gfx card

You could always save a little and get a 320mb 8800GTS. If not get a 7900 or a X1950.

pending on how your lil bro is with the ladies, you may need to double up on the HD for his porn collection. Looks pretty sweet for $600.

lmao...I gotta agree with the above.

I would suggest you buy a Ultra Micro Fly w/ the 400w PSU and get the Biostar AM2 7025 mATX mobo.....it will work great and suit him better in college since it is an SFF setup.

Go for a lower end case - if you can stand ordering from Newegg, the Cooler Master Centurion (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119068) would be a great choice, along with a solid power supply like this Hiper (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817128005). About $30 less after the rebates, and better looking than the Sonata in my opinion.

The memory seems good, I'm not sure about the motherboard but it'll probably be stable at the least, and everything else looks good. I would, however, recommend stepping up to a Radeon X1950XT 256MB, again from Newegg, because it is about $160-170 and will offer significantly better gaming performance than the 8600GT, despite the lack of DX10 support. By the time that DX10 is necessary, though, your little bro will definitely be able to afford a new midrange card, or a previous-generation high end card like the 8800GTS/GTX, and be a lot better off.

Overall, good job on the PC! Your brother's gonna be a pretty happy camper, I think.

I agree with socks. The DX10 cards out right now one, are first gen and two nothing is using them as of yet. Most new games still include dx9 mode. Plus the 1950XT is a kick ass card he will have no problems with it at all. (Unless he wants to run Linux)

Finished building his comp a few weeks ago. Finals specs were..

Intel Core 2 Duo e6320 (on sale @ frys)
Nvidia 7950gt
2 gigs of ram
MSI Motherboard
Antec Sonata III Tower
Forgot the hard drive.. i think it was a WD 180gig hd

Total Cost with Tax : ~620

Thanks for the input and suggestions. Went with a dx9 card instead

Sounds like a nice machine for 620, run any benchmarks on it?
