Lenovo X61 or Sony Vaio TZ

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I'm entering college as a freshmen and I'm in the market for an ultraportable laptop. The X61 has tons of horsepower, 2.2ghz/2gb of ram, 8 cell battery (buying a second) and a 10-12 hour hour battery life, best keyboard ever (etc.)--however, it lacks a widescreen display and the incomparable beauty of the vaio. The vaio is, what appears to be, an extraordinarily overpriced machine that is slow as hell. 1.2ghz? Are they kidding? Am I missing something about the performance of the Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor U7600? Still, its just so damn gorgeous.

In light of that, what do you guys think? Is the processor, bundled with 2gb of ram, sufficient, or does the performance offerings of the X61 just make it a no-brainer?

both are fairly expensive for the hardware, but because they are the portables they will be more expensive than say a 15" w/ the same specs. and yes between the 2 the thinkpad is a no-brainer, yuo get more stuff for your money. besides that sony has a history of ok hardware and sub-par tech support, where as ibm/lenovo have pretty good tech support and hardware is built like a tank (i have a t23 thats about 6 years old, still works great). besides thats, sony often uses the most obscure proprietary hardware which if you lose your drivercd you will be screwed, also if you later decide to venture into linux or the like... sony will be a nightmare while the ibm will work surprisingly well .
