Yep I went ahead and purchased it lol. i will give you info when i get it. Its mxm II and has the same power consumption I think but the m5550 can actualy handle the x1800 wich is mxm III becusae the m5550 has a mxmIII conection. My only worry is the heat sink but you know what thats why god gave me a dremel tool lol

My only concern is that it says that it's for asus, but I'm looking forward to your feedback.

Good Luck!

I have seriously been considering an m5550, but I didn't really want the 7600 card. It would be really sweet if this works out - I can't wait to see Green Zach's results, but I am really fearful that it won't work out...

I have my fingers crossed for you though Green Zach - be sure and post as soon as you find something out!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but different manufacturers use different post wiring despite using the same port standards. A Dell 7900gs won't work in the m9700 and vice versa.

Your link says "asus only" so who knows if it'll work...

Please let me know if this 8600M fits your m5550.

The m5550 can not only handle an x1800, like you said, it can handle an x1900. Ask me how i know...

I recently did a video card swap on my own m5550, I went from the GO 7600 to an ATI X1900. (Both are MXM Type III cards)

See my thread for details. The Alienware heatsink DID require a Dremel to clear a small chip on the x1900, but it was a very easy mod, and the original GO 7600 still fits fine too (The portion of the heatsink removed was not a player with the GO 7600).

As far as getting drivers to work with various mobility cards, you just use a program like MobilityDot, DH Mobility Modder.net (for ATI cards anyway), and you don't have a problem installing a driver for your new video card.

Again, please let me know. If an 8600M fits, then Im selling my GO 7600 and ATI X1900 on Ebay!

Well heres teh reason that i dont think that the 8600 will have any problems at all just droping in and going. the 7600 is actualy mxmII not mxmIII but the 1900 is mxmIII because the m5550 mobo can support it but its in a 15 inch laptop so thats y you needed to do a slicht mod. the 7600 and 8600 use the same drivers aswell just makeing things uber killer. because the 8600 is actualy not mxmIII but mxmII makeing it the same size and produce the same amount of heat as the 7600 and not to mention the same power consumption. I can tell you with almost ashure you that your 7600 and 1900 will be on ebay the day I get this card. I will keep every one updated but i should be getting it in less than a week. favorites this link if it works because this is were I got mine

it is a download plug-in on this forum that enables you to do spell check before you submit.

Ive done some research on MXM, PM Ice-Tea like yang recommended as hes mixed and matched different cards with different laptops to ensure compatability. If you read through his different findings with them, you'll notice that MXM is really not a standard as we're lead to believe. Truth is, new graphics, among other components, help push Notebook hardware sales, and the PC vendors haven't truly embraced it due to that.

Every manufacturer seems to have their own twist on MXM and then claim to be upgradeable, what they don't tell you is that its often only with their own cards should they choose to release an upgrade.

Here's a site with alot of mxm upgrade info:

http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/

It's where I bought the x1900 for my m5550. And yes, it did require a dremel to carve out part of the stock alienware heatsink. Fairly easy job though, and heat sink still works fine with the stock GO 7600

I would love to see benchmarks on the 8600 M vs the GO 7600 vs the x1900
