Upgrading m7700 (D900T) model

Thread Starter
Yo,

I am wondering if I can buy the latest stuff from rjtech for the 7900gtx gfx card + rev 6.x mobo and possibly install a new core2 duo processor as my pentium 4 seems a bit old fashioned and I want a little bit more power!

Is this possible?

I think the p4 and C2D use different sockets. The 7700 line only supported p4 processors.

You should be able to buy a new mobo and vid card, but you'll need a 220W AC adapter if you don't have one now.

I'd consider just buying a new system. By the time you get the mobo and vid card, you're already looking at more than a grand.

Just buy a new system if you want to upgrade that much. The Core 2 duo and p4 DO use the same socket. A quick search on newegg proves it ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115030 ) <--- core 2 duo . p4 ( http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819116197 ) . Its the desktop version of the c2d obviously. However, according to rjtech, the mobo WON'T support the c2d. I would be interested in someone testing it out, but i'm not willing to sacrifice my laptop.

Obviously a new mobo and graphics card will not be as expensive as a new laptop. I love my 7700, but if you want a laptop that is more powerful, you will have to get a new one as the p4 really can't compete with the c2d for speed

Core 2 Duo motherboards require a voltage regulator that was new to C2D. The 7700 boards do NOT have this regulator. It is true they are both Socket 775 (or Socket "T"). However, the C2D will NOT run in the 7700, no matter what motherboard revision you have. Sorry. 3.8 Ghz Prescott Pentium 4 is the highest supported.

Thanks for the detailed technical info BFish06. I was wondering what was different about the core 2 duo that made it incompatible.

7700s can't run Core 2 Duo, as that's a limitation of the 915P chipset on the motherboards, rather than the voltage regulator itself.

Typically, you'd need a 6.1 motherboard to run the 7900gtx video cards, as they revised it to supply more power.

Though, you might be able to run the 7900gtx video cards on a revision 5.x motherboard, if you're an EE type with the right tools for SMD work -- it's a slight modification to allow the 5.x boards to pass through 220 watts (versus 180 watts). You'd need to get a new power supply to get the 220 watts into the motherboard, of course. :-)

You're probably better off buying the 6.1 board, though -- it's better than risking a $400 card on a hardware hack. :-)
