My Vostro 1400 has arrived today and i'm already on it. I'll give just a mini review. Oh the specs are 1.6 core 2 duo, 1 gig of ram, wxga+, 120 gig 5400 rpm, 8400 nvidia. not bad for 679.

The build quality is EXCELLENT, definitely compared to my 8600c which never quite felt too sturdy. This baby however is really solid. They keyboard is excellent with zero flex. Touchpad works great for a touchpad and the buttons are really nice. They aren't like my 8600c which was like a clicker, but more of like a keyboard feel when you use them. The laptop screen looks excellent at 1440x900 and the true life is pretty cool.

I have already hooked up my external monitor that is 20.1 inches and it looks really great at the full 1680x1050. I have no complaints and am excited about the new purchase.

which battery did you get? I just ordered a 14" one myself and have a 9-Cell lying around and wanted to know if it protrudes out like the D830?

I also have the 1400 and yes the 9-cell battery sticks out.

I want to load Windows XP Pro onto my recently ordered Vostro. Has anyone had success, as I really don't want to use Vista at the moment.

Which LCD screen do you have? I have a SAMSUNG (SEC4457) and I hate it!! The viewing angle is terrible. Even straight on, the screen is not evenly lit, and if you move your head or don't adjust the display tilt just right, the screen gets darker or lighter (depending on the angle). This is most noted on dark screens.

Go into device manager, then to the Monitors branch. Open it up, and look for a Plug and Play monitor. Double-click that branch. On the details tab, see the Properties drop-down box. Drop down and choose Hardware IDs. This will show the manfacturer code for your panel. Let us know what you have! I had ordered both a Vostro 1400 and a 1500 (knowing with the 30-day money-back guarantee I could return one or both). After having tested both units, I am leaning towards keeping the 1500. Although I wanted something smaller and lighter (like the 1400) as I am currently using an XPS M1210, I don't think I can live with the LCD in the 1400. It constantly plagues me. With the contrast changing all over the screen depending on my position relative to the screen, it's too much to deal with. The 1500 (with the beautiful LG panel), has a stable screen that doesn't change according to where my head is. It is very sharp and colors are great and uniform (not to mention the WSXGA+ resolution is better than the 1400's WXGA+). I like that the power connector on the 1500 is on the back instead of the side (like on the 1400), and that the HD is more easily removed if I want to swap with a different drive (one with Vista, etc.). Now, I just wished I had purchased a 1500 with the GT card instead of the GS!!!

MONITOR\SEC4457 unfortunately.

That 30 day money back is a nice option, but school starts on the 20 and I don't want to be without a computer. I guess I'll just have to suck it up and stick with the 1400. It's a great lappy thus far though, just the screen is not that awesome.

You could always return it and buy a new Vostro 1500 from ebay. Plenty to choose from there, and you'd have it by the time school starts. Just be sure to have the warranty transferred to your name by the seller.
