Linux and PS3

I have seen Ubuntu distro for the PS3 was wondering if anyone has tried it yet? I am thinking about it but am kind of nervous that I will
A) kill my PS3
B) not be able to get everything work drivers wise.

Thoughts, comments, should I do it?

The PS3 is a fully supported platform on Linux, in fact it was one of Sony's selling points, and I believe they have their own distro for it, there is also Yellow Dog Linux out for it as well, and likely a few others.

In fact Linux is the only reason I MIGHT buy a PS3. Of course not enough of one for anytime in the near future.

So Sony put out there own distro or someone made one for it?
basically what seablade is saying is go for it. there are several PS3 distros out there and sony actually advertises the fact that you can get linux on the thing. Yellowdog is actually a good place to go... http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/products/ydl/

Alright I have Kubuntu so I think I am going to put Yellow Dog on my PS3 this weekend. Well do a little write up when I am done.

Gentoo, Debian andFedora Core 5/6/7 also work, although fedora 6 isn't that easy to install.

Will I hit a road block until this weekend. I need to shift a bunch of data around so that I can back everything up. And I am not sure but from the looks of it I can either have 10gigs for the PS3 OS and the rest for Linux or 10gigs for linux and the rest for the PS3. Which is really pissing me off but after I play with it a bit this weekend I will let you guys know. I am going to do a little guide/review/comments on it.

Alright I have install YDL on my PS3 and so far I am not overly impressed. It runs perfect but things are missing.

Bluetooth
tons of codecs
Ability to change screenrez

I will post more later.
surprised that YDL did not include bluezutils by default. Media codecs i can't blame them... a mix of legal issues with compatibility issues (for w32codecs). Changing screen res shouldn't be very hard by editing xorg.conf , of course because of the complicated video card, there are no good video drivers, it has to run on VESA....

bluezutils not only is not included but when you go to DL it from the package manager it fails. Good times. I am currently DL xubuntu.
i dont understand why they wouldn't install the bluetooth apps considering its designed specifically for one set of hardware. the ps3 itself.

I have no idea, kind of weird. I am going to take some screen shots and play with it a little more to get a better idea of what it is about but I just finished DL xubuntu 7.04 and that will be going on quickly.

Another thing that really is annoying is that you have to options to format your PS3 with 10gig for XMB and the rest for Linux or 10 gig for linux and the rest for PS3. I wanted to do a 50/50 split of the drive or at least leave 20gigs for the XMB. 10 isn't enough I download and hold on to demos and a bunch of other crap, plus there a a few games that I am going to be getting that are download only.

i guess the ps3 did make the right choice of including a hard drive, with all that downloadable content who wouldnt want a huge drive

cant you buy like a 120 gb hard drive for the ps3/

60 or 80. 60 is fine its just the way that they let you partition it that blows.

Cant you put a bigger hard disk in the PS3 yourself? Most likely at the cost of your warranty.

Yes but the PS3 OS Controls the partition table so it would be the same problem. Also I don't want to void my warranty just yet.

I hate companies that 'control' hardware. one reason I'm psyched about open moko. probably be my next phone if I can get over paying $300. (I've never paid more than $10 for a cell phone.)
