CPU Upgrade for 5960

Thread Starter
I purchased parts for my notebook from RJTech.com and other vendors. Its got the Clevo M590KE chassis (20" screen) and currently running the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60.

I am thinking about upgrading the AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-60 (2.0GHz) to one of the new "Tyler" models, either the TL-64 (2.2GHz) or TL-66 (2.3GHz). However, I'm wondering if I should be concerned about an compatibility problems.

1. Does anyone know if the Clevo motherboard can handle the upgrade?
2. I see that the new "Tyler" chips handle 800MHz DDR2 memory. Do I HAVE to get 800MHz DDR2 memory? How do you switch memory speeds if you don't NEED it?

Thanks in advance to any help.

All great questions hyungilkim. In fact, I've had this model for the last 5-6 months or so and wouldn't mind upgrading the processor. As far as the memory goes, I would be surprised if you "had" to get the faster memory. I'm not and expert on the matter but have never had a problem with upgrades and processor/memory conflicts in the past.

That is about as much as I can offer, I hope that someone else has the answers.

Funny you should bring this up, i just orderd a tl-66 last week (should be in this thursday) Eurocom ( www.eurocom.com ) lists this processor as one of the options for thier m590ke emperor-x model. so i should work. (btw they have later video drivers that work better than the sager ones ver94.22) Ill post my results as soon as i have it in and back together.

up and running, have to say it was one of easier cpu installs ive done.

booted up without a hitch first time, bios dosent id it but windows does fine. just need to try and get a bios update from sager. keyboard is a little bit warmer, not uncomfortable-just warmer. im guessing it may go down a slight bit when the thermalpaste sets.

3d05 went from 9789 to 11807 and 3d06 went from 6484 to 7790. these were all at medium/application select settings.

I'm sure that this post is all but answered so I'll keep it short. I bought a TL-64 about a month ago, I found the last one from nextwarehouse.com. It arrived shortly thereafter and the installation went without any problems. One of the reasons that I went with the upgrade is that the 35nm architecture is supposedly cooler than the older Turions. I applied the paste, refastened the screws and viola! Bios recognized the processor first time, Windows was the same. It runs a hair cooler than the Tl-60 that I had just replaced so that is one bonus. The biggest gain, however, has been the performance. It runs much faster than the TL-60. Zoromac has given some pretty good numbers that corroborate my claim.
