From Engadget

"It looks like Dell is finally readying a followup to its M1710 speedster with the XPS M1730. The 17-inch laptop will of course be packing some Santa Rosa muscle, but according to rumors Dell's also going to provide that new Core 2 Extreme X7800 chip for the real speed demons / big spenders out there. For graphics the base models will be getting an NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GScard with 256MB of memory , with a 512MB GeForce 8700M GT waiting in the wings. Other rumored specs include 4GB max of RAM and a 512MB or 1GB Intel Turbo Memory option, Bluetooth 2.0, Blu-ray and that welcome numeric keypad addition. The word is this one will go on sale August 27th, and while the paint job is bordering on "crime against humanity," hopefully Dell will have a few more acceptable options to decorate this gaming beast whenever it does hit the market."

Well, to me it feels as if the M1710 going 100mph just decided to upgrade to 70mph

Holy Crap! I need to extend the warranty on this 1710 i got as a replacement as the new "gaming" monster kind of SUX!!!

What are you thinking Dell. AT LEAST WAIT until the 8800 mobile version comes out.

Sigh. i wish i could extend this warranty another 5 years.

On the plus side you get a faster CPU, Dual tray harddrives and Santa Rosa the draw back is both video solutions are poorer than current 7900GS > 8600GS and 7950GTX > 8700GT

Being a gamer's laptop.....I would say the GPU is a major draw back.

I think I'd do Alienware instead now for a gaming laptop. But I prefer a desktop.

My lord that paintjob is a crime against humanity IMHO I can only hope better color options will be revealed. The frame essentially looks like the 1720's frame.

That laptop looks like GARBAGE!

lol

So I guess it is based on 1720's mobo/form factor right? Upgrade may be even easier for inspiron I guess.

Only possible postive thing out of this is that inspiron users may be able to upgrade the GPU whatever XPS is getting in it's future (I have to doubt 8700M GT is the best option for the generation).

I think if i were to get a gaming laptop, id go AW

Only cool thing that came out of new line up is M1330..

I guess best option would be M1330, and a desktop.

AW cost too much IMO.

Oh did I miss something or is there no DVI op for the new XPS 17"?

I don't agree with your opinion, but that comment made me laugh.

I thought the M1710's replacement would get some styling cues from the new M1330. I'll probably get a M1330, but as for my desktop replacement, I might have to wait or get something else. The 8600GS is a downgrade for sure.

Funny thing is all M1710/M90 users have to take care of their lappys even more or you will get the new replacements lol.

God almighty, this is one ugly thing...
Go with Vostro and do upgrades yourself lol.
My God talk about underwhelming.....

What a joke Dell... you guys think THATS a gaming notebook!! You're killing me!

Gawd... I wonder if they even added a second fan to cool the GPU

XPS can now be shoulder to shoulder against HP laptops. Sad thing really.

Oh and WTF am I gonna do with the 3007WFP lol. I was expecting some good upgrades and bought the damn LCD first lol!.

I think you were spot on before Achilles about getting a 1330 and a desktop. To think I have been waiting with such anticipation for this......Boy oh boy talk about dissapointing huh.
