Dell M1730 Revealed Everything we feared is true! - Page 6

I've wanted that hybridization for a long time - ever since it was first described by ATI.

Has anyone noticed the ports are upside down?

Wow, Dell, wow. Those higher res pics of that hideous thing called a laptop really show off how ugly that thing is. It's so unrefined. What a piece of shit.

I think I could live with the looks granted Dual 8700GT's or 8800's/9800's (hopefully)

9800's?? we are hardly seeing 8700s out there and you have your hopes up for a 9800's? lol. I guess some dont lose hope in situations like this.

Agreed. The only competition for my money will be the Alienware 9750 when it gets SLI DX10.

One theory is that the 65nm die shrink of the 8800 series will simply be rebranded as the 9800 series. That would mean that any version of the 8800m for notebooks would probably be called 9800m. Same card, just might get a different name.

potentially cooling off a very hot and power sucking card like the as yet unconfirmed and unreleased go8800 will be. the only reason we dont have one thus far is that its too hot and needs too much power but nvidia is working on it. possible that dell is planning ahead.

also there will be quad core coming too which produces more heat and by default needs more power so thats another possible aspect of the large power supply and extra fans. remember that the m1710 has more than just one fan too... but its not sli.

the really important question is will it appear in the new series of stargate atlantis and how quickly can it dial a stargate!

It looks like the DVI and S video ports are on their own panel - not part of the the chassis as they usually are. Looks like it will be easy for Dell to change these connectors, maybe adding HDMI, at a later date without having to re-engineer the entire chassis.

Looking at those pics reminds me of the "brick" that was the XPS Gen 1/Inspiron 9100... Its NOTICEABLY thicker than the Inspiron 1720, thats for sure.

As far as SLi... That's already been confirmed by MrEvil... If Dell can get a higher-end GeForce 8x00M or 9x00M card in there, then that'll be worth while. The other thing would be mobile Core 2 Quad processors...

Finally, I do have to agree that the port layout is absolutely ridiculously stupid. Everything's all over the place. OY...

In this case however, it is indeed SLI.

My thoughts exactly

Ja,ja i knew i was right sli, it is pity that it looks so ugly, maybe alienware makes another laptop not so ugly, i like the m9750.

I don't know what GPUs we'll get in SLI for the 1730 but all I know is the attached photo looks ALOT like a dual GPU video card to me.

Just noticed something else in the teardown pictures. a Physics card.

Does it really? Your eyes apparently are light ages better than mine xD

Well I can say I am surprised.I didn't think my opinion of this new XPS could be any worse. Apparently I was wrong though.

dropping USB ports, dropping the sub, having what looks like a smaller battery ( am I imagining this?)

The thing looks like Frankenstein from the side. It looks like it was slapped together with little or no aesthetics in mind. It is about as aerodynamic as a brick.

No offense but this is a design I would have expected to see 5 years ago.

Yeah, the design went to hell....but at least what's inside is pretty nice.

Where in the world do you see that? If that is the case, then this notebook just rose to the top of my wishlist. But so far, that seems like wishful thinking.

Couldn't agree more that the design is disappointing, but from the four or five threads I've read about this rumored notebook 90% don't even look past the design to the specs. Dual 8700m's in SLI would be something new, but what if it really is the oh so sought after 8800m/8900m and its available in SLI. That would make this notebook worth a second look despite its design flaws. This notebook will be a joke until it is confirmed to have the 8800m or its equivalent even if that isn't at launch.
