13.3" or 14" widescreen @ 1440x900

Is that a pipe dream?
I've been waiting for a slim and light laptop to come with those specs. Dell m1330 comes pretty close, as does the Sony SZ series, but nobody seems to have the high-rez yet...

i believe the t-series thinkpads (60 and 61) have them along with a couple asus models (i think i've seen some) have a 14" wxga+ (1440x900) screen

I'd say it's not a very popular market. Laptops that size are usually made for convienence and portability; with a screen that size, it would kinda of hard to read, but images and games would look great.

True, but if the OS designers could improve a bit more on this field, I guess that problem would be solved without much trouble (last time I remember changing DPI on control panel, everything was horrible, situation may have improved though). Vectors can be a much better option than fixed size pixels, for UI, which is something that doesn't require the details of say, a photo. It's mostly vector-based (the idea). Games, fidelity for text (screen preview->paper) and, of course, the market for pro image manipulation could benefit from high DPI screens. IIRC (since I'm no Apple user), I believe the fruit company is more on the vanguard than MS. I wondered that when I was testing Safari (didn't like, but still...) and re-remembered how different their font rendering engine is different from the MS concept. I would like a high res I could effectively use!!

WXGA+ on 14" has about the same DPI as WSXGA+ on 15.4". Many people, myself included, consider it to be the optimal pixel size.

Yes. Although many people do know what to expect, I think many others don't, saying that some screens with some res. would be too tiny, when they don't realize they already use it on other screen sizes.

Curiously, a 13.3" WSXGA+ has about the same resolution as a 15.4" WUXGA (148 vs 147 DPI. See the post on my sig), and it's not like there aren't ANY 15.4" screens at that res out there. Expensive, but already feasible. I believe these screens don't appear in the market more because people think wrong about this issue. It's vicious circle: they don't want some small size high res because they think it's small (angular size), but they can only really know if they use it, but how can they use it if they don't want the manuf. to produce it? Only clear information can break this.
