So i wanna get one, or 4 of them, when will it be in the US?

And will the normal asus carriers have them? Newegg, and asus barebone sellers?

Also, what if anything is upgradeable on it?

Ive googled and seen very little

From what I understand, the price will be ~$250, depending on the hard drive and screen sizes. There are supposed to be 2 versions: 7" and 10".

Other than that, the 7" version should be coming out around the end of August/beginning of September. The 10" is scheduled for next spring.

I must say, the price tag on this is very tempting. Unfortunately, the screen is too small for my eyes.

For those who don't know much about the EEE:

Display: 7" / 10"
Processor: Intel mobile CPU (Intel 910 chipset, 900MHz Dothan Pentium M)
Memory: 512MB RAM
OS: Linux (Asus customized flavor), Windows XP (once drivers are released)
Storage: 4/8/16GB flash hard drive
Webcam: 300K pixel video camera
Battery life: 3 hours using 4-cell battery
Weight: .89kg / 2lbs
Dimensions: 8.9 in x 6.5 in x 0.82 in - 1.37 in (width x depth x thickness)
Ports: 3 USB ports, 1 VGA out, SD card reader, modem, Ethernet, headphone out, microphone in

I didnt know that a 10" version is coming out, now i am going to wait! haha. I came back from abroad for two months to find my S5n not charging the battery any more and me thinking about a replacement. The only thing that would make the Eee better is if it had Bluethooth so teather with my phone for the internet.

But still i am seriously considering getting one, just as a toy i guess... im really glad that it has an ethernet port, most of those small palm PC's dont, like my Nokia 770 internet tablet.

? Is this just vanilla windows XP or WinCE? I thought that the use of solid state storage ruled out XP as it has a limited number of write cycles which standard os aren't very efficent in using. Still this could be a great little entertainment notebook, pity about the xandros based OS.

I think that is why XP is not pre-loaded, but it is XP capable. I am super interested in getting one. I wonder how the flavor of Linux they have on it will run, compared to say Ubuntu? Im guessing it will be a lot faster booting, etc since it is a tailor customized distro.

Asus has always been good about making things cross compatible through lines, ie: on the S5n and the U1f the external optical drivers are interchangeable, so hopefully my S5n external optical drive will work on the Eee!

I think I read that the boot time is 15 seconds (combo of faster read speeds and custom linux distro). The distro is based on xandros but some people in the ubuntu forums are thinking about buying one.

EDIT; Boot time 10 seconds shut down time 5 seconds!

Im really seriously contemplating getting one, i mean it weights about as much as my S5n, but my S5n is getting kind of old now, almost 3 years and im on my third battery.

It would be nice to have something smaller. I was looking at the U1f, but its over $2,000. And pretty much for the same thing, except less ram, HDD space and about the same processor speed, but no leather palm rests... lol, oh and the U1f has an 11.1 screen.

Personally, I can only get one if the whole Windows XP thing pans out. I love Linux, but it would be for work and the software we use only runs on Windows XP (despite being a "web application"). Everything else looks fantastic. The price really is near-unbeatable, and the size if excellent.

I was looking at the Via/packard Bell "nanobook";

It costs more (~$600) but is available now, just a pity it looks like an oversize alarm clock.

There is one main thing that bums me out about this set up: those damned speakers. They said they had to put them in the screen area because they couldn't go anywhere else... but frankly... I would have rather seen a bigger screen, shittier speakers (on side or something), and a higher pricetag. I will however be buying one just for fun. I'll be posting pictures and what not.

Seeing as how I can buy 3 of these for the same price as an iPhone, it's definitely coming close to the definition of a disposable laptop. I remember not a few years ago that portable DVD players were $350-400.

If it is possible to run games emulators on the eee i will get one just for fun, i wonder if i can install xubuntu or minimal gentoo install to make the most of it.
It already comes with Linux installed. I don't see why you'd want to change the OS unless you just don't like Asus' version.
Yeah, but it is a varient of Xandros and I don't like proprietary components included as standard and the "faustian bargain" they made with Microsoft.
xandros fails @ life. would be kinda fun to build a custom gentoo-based config on that thing...though how long would it take the 900mhz dothan to compile junk? maybe something along the lines of Arch might work better.

900mhz is just enough for what its ment to do, hell ive surfed on a 500mhz celly way before the northwood core came out, and it was decent enough

and typing up documents is easy
