It looks like a few things have changed, these are from the Eeeuser.com forums:

The news is about Asus's annoucement made in their investor conference held on September 4th. So I guess this is official.

Quote:
Several interesting points mentioned in the article:

1. Eee PC is going to be on sale starting the third week of September in Taiwan.
2. A second version with 8" monitor will be launched in October.
3. The $199 model is for governmental and educational markets only.
4. They may work with mobile carriers to get Eee PC subsidized. So customers can get Eee PC for free if they apply for 3G wireless accounts. (Not sure if they will do that in Taiwan only or also in other countries)
5. Asus will make peripherals for Eee PC, such as 3G wireless module, wifi AP, power brick...etc.
6. The second generation of Eee PC will be released in April next year. It has 9" LCD, uses Intel's Menlow plateform and the battery life can reach 9 hours.

Late September, many online Asus retailers are taking pre-orders right now. The more and more i read about them, the more and more i am thinking that i am going to get the really really cheap one, see how it is and then if i dont like it give it to my mom to replace her Windows 98se laptop.

Allasus.com wants a $150 dollar non refundable deposit with the clause; "Specifications & Prices subject to change. If you place an order we'll keep you updated via Email and/or telephone." Not the greatest offer ever.

hell...i had XP run on a 233mhz and it worked fine for intraweb and office. that wasn't my point. my point was to install gentoo on the Eee... the 900 would take quite a long time to compile the system... we are looking at something like 90 min for the kernel and something along the lines of 1/2 a day for xorg + gnome (more for kde, way less for fluxbox)

Jesus man... ever heard of periods? It makes it a lot easier to understand what you're saying, and also makes it easier for people to take you seriously.

They have been on pre-order at nexus13 for a week or two now with a price of £239.00 (4GB flash drive and 256MB RAM or 512MB with a £30 upgrade). Delivery is stated to take place in November.
No mention of larger drives/different colours/lack of web camera maybe they are still to come?

In a drunken stooper, I decided it would be a good idea to two tickets to the Cinci Miami game for $400. That means I probably won't be purchasing the Eee as soon as I thought. But if I happen to have the means, I'll follow through.

Subscribing to this thread.

Thats a badass little computer. To bad 239pounds is 486bucks (round to about 500 dollars ). I personally would like to own that 10inch system to just play around with.

Two new models added on nexus13.co.uk, a £199 model with 2GB of storage but otherwise the same and a £269 model with 768MB of RAM and a 1GB SD card included. All due for release in 2nd week of November.
Oh, I almost forgot, stuff has a review;

To bad there not out yet here in the USA

If I do get one I will probably get one with less storage and use "portable apps" or similar from a large USB/SD flash storage device, but it would be a little too sluggish for openoffice.
