I has a service manual for the XPS M1730

Dell has available for me the Service Manual to the M1730 XPS. It's a biggun...looks kinda like the 1720 only much thicker. Yes, it does indeed have a 230W Power supply and by looking at the Teardown pictures the Video card is a dual GPU for some Sli Action. The specs list the 8600GS as the GPU....They do support SLI so it's quite possibly you're getting a pair of 8600GS's which are better than one or none. Here's some other notable features...higher end video cards are no doubt planned as well:

DVI Port (no VGA Port) and S-video output.
Backlit Keyboard
Traditional XPS LEDs color customizable.
Gaming LCD similar to Logitech's little screen on their G15 keyboard (probably will use same software)
Built In webcam.

So there's all I really have on it, along with a complete tear-down and rebuild of the system. Seems pretty cool, and looks like Dell wiill definitely be making other GPUs for this laptop as they become available (as well as it sporting SLi) Oh yeah, it's also that faux carbon fiber look like what showed up with the leaked pics. I kinda like it (I have better pictures than that one site did).

I can has manuel?

Still not like it, I do...
Still ugly, it is...

Backlit keyboard eh? Thats kind of an interesting point. I had figured it was SLI just by looking at the rear picture of the unit in the other thread. You can clearly see two heatsink condensers on the left hand side, with a single thicker condenser for the CPU on the right hand side. We shall have to see what the future holds for the new system....

Thanks for the heads up MrEvil

Sounds expensive.

mmm SLi...nice, but the faux c/f = barf

Can you imagine the performance of this thing with an e7800 processor and dual 8800M cards in SLI when it is all available? That might just be enough to get me over the horrible looks. Battery life has to be crap for this thing though.

well considering the m9750 has a 180 watt power supply and it's a freaking brick, I'm assuming that the new xps 230 watt psu...is going to be the size of 2 vhs tapes stacked on top of each other =P

Exactly. I can finally justify my purchse on my 3007wfp monitor lol (If I can afford + my wife's permission that is).

seriously achilles, it's about time other notebook manufacturer's followed the MBP & added duel link dvi so we can run 3007's =P

oh yeah, I would have to get my wife's permission as well haha, and the affordability part...I don't think she would let me buy something that would half of our mortgage hahaha
post #11 of 22
You know you should always have some savings your wife doesn't know about lol. That usually brings the price of high end electronics alot. How to do it really depends on you lol.

MrEvil, are the DVI and S video ports on a seperate panel?

I wouldn't buy a 30" until they can make one that can scale - or at least allow you to run a 1920x1080/1200 image framed in black.

Right now you only get the native res and something ludicrous like 1280x768.

STill Glad I picked up my Alien lol, if they get a 8700m, SLI's I might be intrested but DX 10 would have to be like the Lady in Red for me to Pursue all the way. Right she's just the woman in Teal.

Just checked my Xbox 360 power supply. Its 200w. This 1730 one is going to be HUGE!

Wow, there better be some awesome SLI numbers thrown arround to justify that. Just think of the idiot who gets this system with the 2.0 processor and a single 8600GS. That'd be a waste of power and cooling system. Now dual 8800m's with an e7800 processor might just make this whole thing seem worth it. I'd hate to have to settle for less and still get this ugly and bulky POS.

Just so long as its more stable than the pos xbox 360 power supply

Mmmm... methinks my next gaming computer will be a desktop or HTPC. More portable

Affirmative. the Video ports are attached directly to the video daughtercard. So if Dell wished to in the future, they could offer a card with a different set of ports. Mind you there's no need for both a DVI and HDMI connection on the PC. Both can carry HDCP...it's just that HDMI has connections for audio not just display. The reason the M1330 has HDMI is because it's a smaller port and doesn't take up as much room as DVI. The 1730 has all the room in the world for the DVI Port.

However, I'm disappointed in the lack of a docking station connector. Maybe the M90 replacement will have one. I can only hope.

Ye but still it's uuuuugly!!!!! and can also would imagine a steep price increase for 2 video cards for minimul performance gains over the top of the line vidio card running single not SLI ..... not to mention the size factor and the size the powerbrick will be a beast then to top it off the goofy offset touch pad.

In all honesty the 2010 looks more apealing to me if I had to choose and if it had better GPU options.
Even better yet I think it 's time to hang on to my m1710 for as long as I can and build a direct X10 desktop.

ppl. need to calm down until final specs/prices are released from dell and even then it is smart to wait for some good reviews.

back light keyboard, that explains the white color. Can we have maybe an underground copy of the service manual? :P
