3.4 EE VS 3.4 Northwood on 8790?

Thread Starter
I looked for it but came up with nothing, has anyone ever used the 8790 to benchmark the P4 3.4 EE against the 3.4 Northwood? I'm just curious how many frames one would expect, all of the benchmark articles i've seen it pit against the 3.2 northwood, or the 3.2 Prescott, but even then I assume those were on desktop machines, I want to see benchmarks that include the limitations of the 256 9700 mobility, and preferrably on the 8790, what fps would you expect running say Far Cry retail with these?

look at adams review on it

I have an 8790 with a 3.2 northwood and it can run farcry at full settings except for AA at 1024*768 very nicely. It has gone below 30fps but not oftin and its not noticable when it does. I dont think anyone actually has an 8790 with a 3.4 EE yet. Does not seem worth it to me and i dont think they are shipping yet, but thats just my opinion.

I'd expect a large increase, especially in dx9 games. 5-15 fps increase maybe. That 2 mb of L3 cache helps it in dx9 games...which use alot of shaders. In far cry with a 3.4...36..38ish maybe more. The extreme edition is THE gamers chip. If you're a hard core gamer with some extra cash and you want to squeeze all the performance you can out of a laptop..I'd get the EE.

I'm sure the EE would make a huge difference, but relative to the value of the laptop, is it really worth the extra $675? That's pretty steep.

That's my take on it, Vroom. Simply a magnificent waste of precious resources. If I were to spend that much money on something frivolous, I'd do it on paint

However, for a hardcore gamer with cash on hand, as long as you can verify that the EE units are actually shipping, you might as well pick it up. I wouldn't recommend this CPU to anyone but the moneybags hardcore gamer-types.

I have an EE

This is also a big issue I have to deal with....

Also Northwood vs. Prescott?

uh oh...

what?

also another dumb question:
Is the Northwood Processor Hyperthreading?

Northwood, Prescott, and EE are all HT.

IF i where you i would just go with a 3.4 northwood non EE edition
iv read more then one review about the 3.4EE and it is not worth the exrta $600 at max you only gain about 10% porformance gain so if i where you id do a lot more research before you make that choice.... i was in the same boat you are in now but i went with the Normal 3.4 northwood P4
id wate tell the price drops way down because the price:Performance is not there. i would just add a second drive and raid 0 it or put that exrta money twards something else like that.

here this will get u started
http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20040201/index.html

it compairs the Perscotts and the EE
just google 3.4EE reviews best of luck to you

EDIT:
I actuly went back at looked at some of the reviews again and it is only around 10FPS in some games not 10% increeace
post #13 of 24
I just went ahead and got it because that extra 10% helps in terms of it is the last on the road map for the socket and plus I won't be dropping anymore money on computers anytime soon.
i guess and extra $600+ is worth 10fps but o well some people just have money to burn and some dont

i have the money i just look at the price over performance and 600+ dollors just wosent worth 10%

maybe if it was 50$ or more i might beable to justify it more.... owell i guess hope you dont regret it at all down the road

People say the same thing about choosing a custom paint job too. If you can afford the luxury (and want it) then you should get it.

On the EE... Maybe it just feels like a 10% difference now, but in the next few years, there are certain to be more and more processor taxing applications. So, that 10% might be welcomed.

And if having the EE keeps you happy enough to hold onto your machine for another 6 months, that $600 seems to feel worth it. Maybe it bought you enough time to wait for the release of the P7 11.4Ghz EE

Lol @ 11.4Ghz. I hope this thing lasts me atleast 2 years. Of course, I want a desktop anyway cause I haven't had a desktop in 5 years.

Jaisin, what kind of performance are you getting with your 3.4 EE system and Far Cry?
Pretty good. I can't compare it to anyone I know, but it only lags when I have everything on the highest setting, but thats probably more of a videocard issue.

The AMD Athlon 64 is also very fast and the power is equal to the P4 EE...but he is much cheaper and supports 64-bit for the future. And he supports cool n quiet. A notebook with this processor would be much better than a oven like a notebook with a P4...

I believe that your "signature" directly below your user name is highly inappropriate and I am politely asking you to either remove it or change it. I think your life without cops would be a lot different than you seem to imagine. Please don't have me take it to a higher level.
