Atheros Wireless N Card - Page 8

Thread Starter
For the record, I am 100% satisfied with the Gigabyte card running on Vista Ultimate and speaking regularly to a D-Link DIR-655. I also had zero problems when it speaks with a Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 router (i.e. non Atheros based). I've had on parity error, and that was only after switching to a specific set of NVIDIA drivers with a modded (by Pieter) inf. There's no guarantee that the parity error was even related to the Gigabyte.

Why I'm having such great success with this card and others aren't is beyond me. I know of other users on other sites that are raving about this card as well.

The problem seems to be related to the 9400, according to your sig you don't have one, that's probably why

yeah, it's kinda stupid...imagine if a HP released a printer with a driver so you can print, but no way to configure any printing preferences! How lame...
you can use the vista built in one, but it sucks :/

Atleast Vista SP1 is fixing the Wireless N problems.

Always supply a link I'll host them to make it easier to find. Vista SP1 does nothing that change the name of the error and the Atheros card Still in beta testing ofcourse, being a NMI error means intant crash with no log files, so hard to diagnose with Microsoft to troubleshoot. In the end I didn't go for the N1 it was too expensive even in a special. I'll order a DIR-655 tomorrow, it should arrive later in the week, it costs more but is soooo much faster. Hopefully it will clear up the errors, or I'll have 2 Atheros cards and a bogus router.

I get the same problem on the Toshiba A100 and the Dell Latitude D820, so it's not just the i9400.
Hope to test the Atheros router theory later this week.

Pieter, let us know how it works.
If you end up not liking the 655, I will buy it from you (I have been holding out for the 855, but getting impatient).
I figure if the atheros cards still dont work I will go ahead and get a 1500/1505 but I am hoping the new router will fix things for you.

I'm lazy so I always just go here for my drivers. Of course, I am a little out of place in this thread since I neither have vista (well not installed at least) nor a wireless n card.

Its interesting that I got a parity error with no drivers installed on a clean windows install but once I installed the drivers, I haven't heard a peep again. I don't typically use XP that often so it could be coincidence, but I had to use XP all last week which is why I am thinking otherwise. By the way, I used the 5.3.0.35 (thinkpad) drivers.

Cheers dude, got it and uploading now, follow link in sig and head on over to WLAN section for downloads.

Do you know what the PDB files do ?
Never seen them before, they're not called from the INFs

Where are you based, the postage might put a dampner on it
It had better work, I've forked out NZ$320 that is awfully expensive for a 11bg only router, that I'll never probably use anyway as I'm a 11a fan.

You should be able to use the v6 drivers in XP and still have the Client Utility.
I've found some Atheros ones that are bundled with toshiba's.
But only work in X86.

Cheers for that link having a nosey there now

Thanks, dropped on by LV2G and picked em up. Of course, all of this is somewhat fruitless as I am not an avid wireless or windows user but hey, I have to pass the time somehow.

Driver v7.3.1.107 has been uploaded

pieter

I am located in Japan.
It is a bummer that the 655 (and probably the 855) does not have A band (as I prefer A band as well... very quiet in my area and works well with my xbox360)

I am hoping that you will find these cards work with an Atheros based router.... then I can justify not having A band.

Hey Pieter! Still patiently waiting for your modded Broadcom INF for the 1505. Also, what 1505 Vista driver have you found works best--the Dell driver v4.102.15.61, the Microsoft/Vista Broadcom driver, or the latest driver from Broadcom for the 1505? Thanks!

Do you mean the band it uses, because it's obviously a b/g/n router, not just a b/g router? Also, when you get it, make sure you configure it for WPA2 and AES (or configure your PC for AES and WPA2 and set the 655 to AUTO) otherwise, you will find that you have erratic behavior when connected using an "n" card. If you connect with TKIP or WPA, it will appear to work, but suddenly stop for no good reason! BTW, how much USD$ is NZ$320? That sounds expensive!
