Alienware Woes: Advice?

My 3450 has dead pixels now.

My Sentia M3450 is not even a year old (only about 10 months old) and it spent probably more than a month of that time in and out of Alienware repair depots. The first time it was sent in I was working with Virgil and my converter card/ribbon for the LCD had to be replaced. The problem with the card was solved, but I received the laptop is very poor condition. The case had been reassembled incorrectly and I had to actually send it back in to be realigned and any damage repaired. The damage actually wasn't even repaired, it's just somewhat hidden now that the case is on correctly.

After that everything seemed to work fine until my motherboard's power supply died.

I called in to have that repaired, but I was told Virgil had been promoted and now worked in a different department. I e-mailed Virgil (he had told me to always talk to him for repairs) and he told me I was reassigned to Oscar and asked me to not contact him anymore.

Oscar got that fixed up and, again, everything was fine until my card reader died. Oscar then got the motherboard replaced and everything seemed fine again. He called me after I received the laptop and told me if there was anymore problems to call him and we would explore other possibilities of repairs. An exchange of laptops was specifically talked about. He agreed with my fear that each problem had damaged other pieces of hardware and that was why there were so many problems. The solution seemed to be just replacing everything.

So now I have dead pixels on my LCD screen. The Sentia is still under warranty and Oscar told me to call if there was anything wrong, so I called last night. The rep last night said he would e-mail Oscar to call me back after 1PM EST, but I received no call. I called back at 4PM and was was told Oscar had been promoted to a new position in a different department, same as Virgil.

He also said Oscar had closed my ticket and therefore any new problem would go through them.

After a long talk the rep told me he had assigned my ticket to a new rep in Oscar's old position who would call me within 24 hours, but there was nothing else he could do for me until I uploaded screenshots of the dead pixels.

This laptop isn't even a year old and already it has had to have 3 components replaced and a repair made to the case due to the treatment it received at the repair depot the second time. It's taken quite a few scratches from being handled at the repair depots. I've had it for a little over 10 months and out of that 10 it has spent at least a good month in Alienware repair depots and being shipped back and forth. And now, after all that, there are dead pixels.

I'm aware of AW's dead pixel policy and I will do the tests they're asking me to do, but with all the repairs it's received I can only place the blame on faulty hardware. Especially after having components directly related to the LCD replaced (converter card/ribbon and motherboard).

I've never lost my cool with AW, yet. I even gave Oscar a glowing review while talking to his manager after the last repair, but now I'm getting pretty upset. I've had two reps get "promoted to new position(s) in a different department" twice now and now I feel like I'm being told to just deal with it.

What's your take on this? I don't think I'm being unreasonable. It feels like I'm getting screwed now. Or am I wrong?

I forgot to mention that after the LCD card was replaced my DVD-R drive also died and had to be replaced as well.

I also just spoke to another rep at Alienware and was told Oscarwas not promoted, but Oscar instead no longer works for Alienware. I was also told I would be receiving a phone call at or around 1:30PM tomorrow from my new "special agent" assigned to me who wants to discuss the dead pixels and the laptops history. I asked about a replacement and was told that could be done "if the special agent agrees with the idea" when I talk to them tomorrow.

Third rep is the charm?

Well hopefully the third rep will straighten everything out. I am bummed to hear that you have had so many problems with it. If it comes down to needing a replacement laptop, I wonder what they would do now that it has been discontinued?

When I spoke to Oscar about it the Sentia had just been pulled off the website. He said if there were more problems with it I'd either get a Sentia of the same specs (if anymore were in stock) or get an M5550 of equal value since it's now about the same price as the Sentia once was.

I'm not an expert on the m5550, but I have it's predecessor- the m5500. That laptop has been a true champ. I've had it for a year and a half and not once have I had a problem with it: Unless, of course you consider that MbWife has taken it over. Anyway, it's a truly great machine.

That's good to hear, we'll see what happens.

My Sentia has just been falling apart piece by piece and I just want something to be resolved and stay resolved I just think it all started with a faulty motherboard that slowly damaged the rest and now I see the repercussions.

I cringe to think that the old MB damaged the replacement parts before it was finally taken out. With the screen showing damage now... ugh

The reason it was pulled off the site is not due to the problems you were having, just a FYI. Alienware is not in the portable or ultraportable market anymore.

The 3450m "Clevo" was hounded with issues, I loved the look of mine, but it also had problems related to the MB. My 7700 was the same, again "Clevo".

I'm going to agree about the 5550, it's a great machine and I use mine every day for up to 12 hours straight!!! I do miss the protability of my sentia though.

Good Luck with your machine!

Ya, I know that's not why it was pulled, but it had to come up if an exchange is possible. It's a shame they're pulling out of that market, but then again AW is more well known for gaming. That kind of left the little Sentia out in the cold with its integrated graphics and smaller screen. AW-Isaac is getting me back in touch with Virgil, my original agent. Virgil was always very helpful and communicated with me constantly, so I have faith this will all work out. I'll hope for the best and I'll keep you all updated. Thanks Isaac!

That's good news!

It makes sense that Alienware wouldn't offer an ultra-portable anymore. Dell currently offers the XPS 1330, which is a very nice system in that space. They also have a nice selection of small footprint business-class systems to choose from.

IMO, Alienware is nicely positioned in the market. They made the right move killing off the 5500 and 3500 desktop lines too. They need to stay at the high-end where the money is.

Then again, Alienware may surprise us one day and come out with a super small notebook for gaming!

Hope you get this all resolved!

I have terrific news! I received an e-mail from Alienware stating I had two options - I could send the laptop in for a replacement LCD or send it in for an exchange. I took the exchange: Area 51 M5550 Video/Graphics Card: 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Display: 15.4" WideXGA 1280 x 800 LCD - Saucer Silver Processor: Intel Coreā„¢ 2 Duo Processor T7200 2.0GHz 4MB Cache 667MHz FSB Memory: 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz - 2 x 512MB Motherboard: Alienware Intel 945PM + ICH7 Chipset Operating System (Office software not included): Genuine Windows Vista Home Basic System Drive: 80GB Serial ATA 1.5Gb/s 5,400 RPM w/ NCQ & 8MB Cache Primary CD ROM/DVD ROM: 24x DVD-ROM/CD-RW Burner Sound Card : Intel 7.1 High-Definition Audio Wireless Network Card: Internal Intel PRO Wireless 3945 a/b/g Mini-Card Communications: Integrated 10/1000Mb Gigabit Ethernet & 56K V.92 Modem It's just short of $200 less than my Sentia cost me and lacks my Sentia's DVD +/- RW drive, but the Sentia is fairly depreciated now and discontinued, so it seems a fair and generous deal. Plus, I just installed a brand new Lightscribe DVD burner in my PC and it just flies, so I'm not too bothered by that. I also asked if I could pay the $100 (or whatever, Alienware's site says it adds 100) to get the WUXGA 1920x1200 screen. Even if I can't buy the upgrade I'm thrilled. The standard 5550 display beats out the Sentia's, so it'd be silly to even care. It's just what I would add if I were ordering a new 5550 and you can't upgrade an LCD later. It looks like everything is turning out just great. Thanks Isaac, Virgil, and Alienware

We need Yang to sticky this as a SUCCESS story of Alienware's dedication to customer and product. You hear all too many horror stories and all too few good stories. Let's get this one out there!

Absolutely. I had a ton of problems, but I can never say I was ever not helped. It took some persistence at times, but if you're calm and work with them (not yell at them!) you'll get fixed up.
