Giving up Windows.

Thread Starter
I have had my last BS I have been playing with Linux on and off for sometime now and like how well it has been treating me. So I am ditching XP for good I have everything working that I use daily but two programs.

iTunes for my iPod. Now I know rockbox is out there but the last few times I tried it I could never get it to work right. Now I guess I could just use WINE but would prefer to ditch iTunes all together and go with something Opensource so any ideas/help would be great.

M3 game manager is the other program. I have and use an SD card for my DS lite the only way to get the games to work is to run them threw M3 I have not tried this in WINE but am hoping that it works. Once I get everything up and going I will ask more specific questions on the game Manager.

I want to go with Ubuntu/Kubuntu for the time being just to stay close to something I am more familiar with so which one will have the better luck with the iPod and easy photo editing.

This is going on my Dell i9300 I have gotten all hardware working before with out any problems but the SD card reader and that I want to try to get going on my own.

And GO!

you might post the output of
Code:
louis@laptop:~$ lspci
other wise I'm not sure what to tell you about the SD card reader. Mine worked out of the box. I'll look for alternative programs when I get a little more time. Probably someone else will drop in with an answer before me though.

ok. well, I'm certainly not the most well qualified to be trouble shooting this, but what output do you get from?
Code:
iwconfig
Ok sorry I have been rather busy lately, started 7 days a week of work at my primary job, starting another job, and just got two more on top of everything else.

On the flip side hopefully this means i will be able to afford my new laptop

At any rate, from your lspci (By the way, usually it is better to attach the -v flag to lspci to get detailed output) it looks like you have a Ricoh card reader, and it appears there is a module to support SD and MMC cards through it in the linux kernel as of 2.6.18

http://hardware4linux.info/component/19204/

The sdhci module, so try a modprobe sdhci as root and see if it works, if not just post up the output and we can go from there. How detailed info do you need me to go into to get it working from there out of curiosity?

In as far as software to interface with the iPod, there are some out there I have heard about in passing, but I never pay attention as I don't use em myself, sorry.

In as far as wireless, post up the output of the following(As root as needed)

lspci -v
lsmod
modprobe -l
ifconfig

And throw in the iwconfig for good measure

By the way, info can be found here about your computer apparently...

http://hardware4linux.info/system/624/

Though I believe you have an intel wireless card, which should be well supported if I remember right, and that page lists and Aetheros card I believe.

Alright two problems down thanks guys.

Wireless is up and running now. SD card Reader works for SD cards.

Last problem is NTFS. I installed the NTFS 3G but I still cannot access my external drives. I used Adept to install the following.

Alright NTFS is done. I don't know why KDE isn't auto mounting the drive but I guess I will just have to hit terminal up every time I want to use it. This has been awesome I really like how smooth everything is running now and dont see myself using windows unless I am at work. once I figure out what I am going to do with my iPod I am done.
hmm.. do you have ntfs-config? from what I was just reading on Ubuntu Forums (an absolutely fantastic resource, incidentally), if you use ntfs-config to enable read/write on external ntfs partitions (I'm not sure if you have to type in the name of your external drive specifically or not), then the external drive should mount automatically.

And what problems are you having with your iPod?

edit: I took a guess at your iPod problem and sent you a PM.

Darq, check out this: Clicky Edit: scroll down just a bit to this bit:

USB sticks and drives do not automount correctly This sub-section is sourced from this forum page. If you are experiencing problems with automounting usb sticks and/or drives, but do not have problems with automounting CDs or DVDs, and if you are able to manually mount the USB device in question, then you should create the file "preferences.fdi" in the folder /etc/hal/fdi/policy and paste the following line into the file <merge key="volume.ignore" type="bool">false</merge>

Well everything is working but WEP, WPA no problems but when ever I try to connect to a wireless network that is using WEP Knetwork just hangs at 57% and then stops trying to connect. I know that I am using the right passkey.

I think I read somewhere that you have to edit the config files to switch back and forth. sounds like a royal p.i.t.a. if you ask me. Personally I can NOT understand why someone cant take those cracker tools for breaking into wireless access points and adapt them to simply allow one to select the network/encryption method, enter any pass phrase and connect. But I know absolutely NOTHING about coding/programming so maybe it's not quite that simple.

well, pretty much just go in and comment out those lines (put a "#" in front of those lines). I COULD be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I saw that when I was trying to get it working on my laptop.

Not going to bother I got WPA working for now and its the only router I connect to that uses WEP.

Did you pick a software package for iPod yet? I know that Amarok supports iPods and is a great player as well.

Yeap Amarok is what I went with I love it. Loads 10x faster then iTunes and does everything I need. All in all I am super happy about dumping windows.
