Your first choice is better because the 2nd choice would hinder your gaming greatly since most of your games would be bottlenecked at the GPU.

Agreed, the first choice is definitely the better of the 2

The 8400M is not a strong GPU - definitley go with the 8600M GT if you want to play newer games.

Can you configure it without the 8xxx vid card? b/c if you're going to be gaming the 7950 beats out the 8400/8600.. unless you can wait for the 8800. Otherwise go with your 1st choice

+1 for the 8600gt..........pick your first choice for now and upgrade the CPU later on your own, DIY FTW!

the 8600m gt is not a bad card, does not beat a overclocked 7900gs but my 8600m gt beats my old stock 7900gs, i play bf2142 on high settings just fine, as well as company of heros. only scored 1k less in 3dmark05 then my 7900gs both oc'd

Definitley go with the second and don't listen to all the people who say the 8400 can't run the newer games I have one and I can run bioshock at med settings with about 25-30 fps and about 40 at lowest settings.

Who wants to play games on the lowest settings with their new laptop. . . . ? I would definitely avoid the 8400 unless you are NOT planning to play newer games.
