wifi catcher does not work! m1210

good day,

the wifi catcher stop working after i uninstalled the intel proset/wireless application. im just wondering if the wifi catcher is part of the intel proset apps?

i set windows xp to handle my wifi network and just installed the intel proset/wireless driver only.

i can still use the on and off button for wifi, but the other options are greyed out.

i think im missing a software here, but i dont have plans in reinstalling the intel proset application. is there any other dell utility that i can use?

I have the same issue, my options are grayed out too because i choose to use the XP wifi controller... the actual switch itself will still FIND wifi if the machine is OFF, its just all the quickset options are unchangeable... is that the same for you?

You'll have to use Dell Quickset and the Intel Proset software to use your Wi-Fi Catcher when the system is booted to Windows. The Wi-Fi catcher will still work with the system powered down.

theres no way around that? i dont want the intel software loading with windows even if i am not using it.. its too much of a resource hog..

exactly the same, i also switch to xp to manage my connections. but before i uninstalled it i left the network locator untick, so i think i can't use the network locator anymore.

it seems that you need the intel proset for this to work. is there any other apps for this?

update, just tweak the bios, i was able to enable the network locator. but everything still greyed out.

I don't know why you guys want to use XP's crap-tastic built-in configuration utility. It SUCKS big time. It's been a while since I've used Intel's utility but the utility with my Dell Wireless card offers MUCH more features than the standard XP utility does. Things like site survey, exauhstive info about a network without being connected to it. It also has information on stability and strength. It also has some pretty good diagnostic utilities for the card itself.

Like I said though, it's been a while since I've used an Intel Wireless card (There was a reason I purchased the Dell Wireless after all). I do remember that I found the utility rather useful despite the card's tendency to drop connection and switch to my neighbor's weak signal.

Still not as awesome as the Cisco Aironet 350 I had in my old Inspiron 8200.

Well i think its pointless to have a bunch of software running in the background that is unneeded (for me at least) the wifi service that xp offers is more than fine for me, and i've had zero problems with the intel wireless card... i wouldnt mind for these wifi catcher options to work without the extra intel crap cause it really REALLY uses too much ram and what not... it slows down my boot time, etc.

I'm curious. My Inspiron 1420 has one of those wifi switch thingers and I have no idea what it does. Is that the wifi catcher? What's the point of it?

it will detect if there is a wireless network around you without having to power up the laptop...
What good is that if you can't use it until you power up the laptop?
you are SUPPOSED to be able to use it WITHOUT powering up the machine... if yours isnt working without the machine being on then there might be a problem... i dont know i am not too familiar with the 1420

The whole idea why they created it is so if you are looking around for wireless networks, you don't need to boot your pc and let others see what you are doing (kinda sneaky). It will light up for a few seconds to say you have networks in range... if you don't like it, don't use it...

yeah its just there to let u know IF wifi is available and if there is THEN you turn on the computer to use the internet... its there to prevent you from having to keep turning the computer on to find a wifi hotspot
